Hello Lydia,
“Better together.” It might be a cliché, but it’s also something our office believes in. From our addition of group presentations at Council meetings to community planning workshops to our State of the District celebration, this email highlights just a few of the many ways the District 9 team is aiming to harness the collective power and wisdom of our community to create a better San Diego for everyone.

The truth is that working together isn’t always easy. In fact, it rarely is – especially in a community as rich with diversity as ours. However, we believe strongly that the benefits of collective efforts far outweigh the challenges. That’s why we’re investing so much time this week – and always – in bringing you and your neighbors into our conversations and processes. Even if we disagree on some (or most) of what we discuss, I believe we all have much to learn from one another.
I hope you’ll take advantage of some of the opportunities we’re presenting this week and that you find participating as rewarding as we do.

REMINDER: D9’s State of the District is tomorrow, Saturday, February 12th at 2pm!
Join Council President Elo-Rivera and the District 9 Office as we honor our communities, uplift the work we have done together in the first year of our term, and look ahead to what's to come. This will be an in-person, outdoor event with masking required.

What's Happening at Council and District 9 | |
Group Presentations at City Council Meetings
Group presentations by the public at City Council hearings are now allowed! As Council President, we updated the rules to allow for organized group presentations for up to 10 minutes on any discussion item (and 15 minutes for quasi-judicial items). This means that now, if you and your neighbors or colleagues want to share information with the Council in a more in-depth manner, that can be facilitated through the City Clerk.
To request to make a group presentation and learn more details about what is needed, take a look at the Group Presentation Sign-Up Form. Your participation in the decision-making process has been and continues to be important to the District 9 office and we look forward to continuing to create a more transparent and accessible City Hall.

Upcoming Cleanups
in the District
Help keep our community clean! We are coordinating a series of community clean up events happening throughout the district in the next couple months. Checkout the times, dates, and locations for cleanups listed and join an event near you.
This is not an exhaustive list of the cleanups that are being planned so stay tuned as more are added!

The People's Ordinance
Last year, the City’s Independent Budget Analyst (IBA) concluded that the “People’s Ordinance” is unfair, costly, and a major barrier to achieving our Climate Action Plan goals. Passed in 1919, the so-called People’s Ordinance requires the City to pick up trash mostly at single-family homes and to do so without charging a fee, while all other residents and businesses must pay a private company.
The San Diego Union-Tribune, environmental advocates, labor unions, and community-based organizations have all voiced support for reforming the century-old law, and Council President Elo-Rivera agrees! The People’s Ordinance prevents us from offering world-class services, from refuse collection to neighborhood parks to reliable fire services. San Diegans deserve better, and San Diegans deserve a responsible government that invests equitably in public services and takes seriously its environmental responsibilities.
Next month, Council President Elo-Rivera intends to introduce his proposal at the City Council Rules Committee. You can learn more about the Ordinance and our offices goals by checking out our one-pager in both English and Spanish.

Build Better SD / SD Planning
Community Workshop
The Build Better San Diego initiative will facilitate the creation of a citywide infrastructure funding program. This initiative will create a standardized Citywide fee for new development to streamline public investments with an emphasis on addressing historical investment inequities and delivering infrastructure to areas with the greatest needs faster and more efficiently across the City.
We encourage D9 residents to participate in one of several workshops being organized for this initiative. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in interactive activities to help imagine better public spaces.

SDFF Tech Support Program
for BIPOC Small Businesses
The pandemic has amplified many issues that have been affecting San Diegans for years. Issues of connectivity and the Digital Divide were only worsened by the pandemic, which forced many institutions to make the switch to a more digital infrastructure, whether they were prepared for it or not.
Right now, the San Diego Futures Foundation (SDFF) is working, with funding from LISC San Diego, to provide a new Small Business Digital Literacy Program that will assist 10 small businesses with consultation and resources. From there, SDFF aim to provide in-depth technical assistance, which may include a computer, web development, software, equipment, and IT Services to some of these businesses. This initiative aims to uplift underserved Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) small businesses in City Heights.
