DISTRICT 6 REPORT
Council Member Trevor O'Neil secures additional funding for wildfire preparedness
At Tuesday’s Anaheim City Council meeting, I received the support from my council colleagues to increase funding for Anaheim Fire and Rescue and other departments to further prepare for a possibly active fire season. As I’ve shared before, wildfire safety and preparedness is my top priority as your District 6 council member.

The item we passed included funding for enhanced services in vegetation management and equipment. These steps are in addition to the already robust preparation plan by Anaheim Fire and Rescue, as we’ve shared in our recent video interview with Chief Pat Russell (also linked below).

Vegetation Management
Our action Tuesday provides $200,000 in funding to address annual weed abatement and brush clearing at the following sites: Deer Canyon, Oak Canyon Nature Center, Pelanconi Park, Olive Hills Reservoir, Fairmont Nature Site, Fire Station 9 and the wetlands.
Equipment
In the Canyon After Action Report, staff had recommended the purchase of four 4x4 diesel 3/4-ton trucks, with at least one set up as a mobile command unit, and three additional Type 6 brush patrol units. To date Anaheim Fire and Rescue has purchased two of the support pickups, and our action approved the purchase of the last two support pickups for a total of $80,000.

Staff also gave a status update on implementation of heat sensor detection technology to aide in early detection of fires and discussed their partnership with Public Utilities to install wildfire monitoring cameras in strategic locations.

For more information, see the city’s  staff report  on Tuesday’s action.

I’m really proud of the work Anaheim has done to prepare for this fire season. Kudos to Anaheim Fire and Rescue, and thank you for your efforts.
