COLUMBUS, Ohio – Today, Columbus City Council passed legislation to address pay inequality and increase transparency in the hiring process through a Columbus Forward initiative brought forward by Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla.
“When job seekers know their potential salary range, they know in advance if a position will allow them to take care of themselves and their loved ones,” Councilmember Barroso de Padilla said. “Closing the pay gap for women, immigrants and people of color is necessary for making sure that our city’s growth doesn’t leave anyone behind.”
As the first piece of legislation passed through Columbus Forward, this initiative will require Columbus employers to include reasonable salary ranges in all job postings so job seekers will know up front what positions will pay, saving time and creating transparency in the hiring process. The legislation couples with the progress Council made toward pay equity when it passed Councilmember Barroso de Padilla’s 2023 legislation to prohibit Columbus employers from asking about job candidates’ salary history during the hiring process.
“Working toward pay equity is a key part of ensuring that businesses want to come to Columbus and their employees can afford to stay,” Councilmember Barroso de Padilla said. “Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo already have pay transparency laws in place, and this will help Columbus’ hiring processes remain both competitive and fair.”
About Columbus Forward: Columbus Forward is a united effort by Columbus City Council to ensure the city’s rapid expansion creates opportunities and improves quality of life for all residents. Several other Columbus Forward initiatives are anticipated to be brought to Council for a vote before the end of the year, including Councilmember Otto Beatty’s legislation to make it easier for residents to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on their properties.
