President’s Remarks

By Marissa Feliciano

President of SAGE

The Council on SAGE is excited to bring you the State of the Senior Living Market at our breakfast program on March 30. Our panel of senior housing experts, spanning from affordable housing to market rate and including 55+ Active Adult to Assisted Living and Memory Care, will discuss the upcoming trends in senior housing development.

This month, the Council on SAGE is shining the spotlight on Orange County’s senior population and the challenges this demographic currently faces. As developers, builders, designers, and vendors that focus on building housing for our 55+ population, we understand how critical it is to address factors such as nutrition and social interaction for our residents.

  • The County’s 65+ population is projected to grow from 17% to 27% by 2060, with the County getting older, faster than the rest of California.

  • The percentage of the County’s population aged 65+ with a disability is 30.4%, representing 148,233 people.

  • Orange County has the fourth-largest population of older veterans in California.
  • It is estimated there are between 113,000 and 200,000 older residents who may not be getting enough to eat due to economic reasons.

  • The estimation of adults aged 65+ in the County who are at risk of social isolation is more than 95,000. Nearly 21% of adults in the County aged 50 and over are at risk of loneliness through social isolation. Fully 60% of residents living within assisted living facilities do not have regular visitors.

  • Loneliness, living alone and poor social connections are as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Exciting news in senior housing: Mission Viejo has a new senior living community! Partnership between MorningStar Senior Living, Confluent Senior Living, and Concord Development Partners has completed a brand-new community MorningStar Mission Viejo. It is conveniently located close to shopping, restaurants, and the post office. The developers broke ground in March 2021 and the beautiful, much anticipated senior living community is now complete.

The 132-unit senior living community offers studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom suites. There are 126 parking spaces below-ground for the resident’s convenience. This spectacular outdoor space including a pool, dog run, resident garden, and al fresco dining. Whole Health Standards were introduced with this new joint project as a new criterion for the partners. Whole Health Standards consider the physical, mental, emotional, and environmental elements that work together to provide the best quality of life for seniors. Confluent, MorningStar and Concord Development Partners are committed to include Whole Health Standards in future communities.
