Welcome to another beautiful month of August and ENEWS. The Waterdown Dairy Queen is holding their annual Blizzard Day Fundraiser on Thursday August 8 - fun for the whole family! Thank you to Jayne Scala and the DQ team. There are two important public meetings coming up this August/September. A proposed expansion to the Waterdown Fortinos is being presented on Monday August 19th at the Waterdown Legion, 7-8pm. A new Live, Work, Play residential, healthcare and seniors housing development proposed for the Clappison Power Centre will also be presented on Monday September 23, 6-8pm at the Hamilton Technology Centre. We are also working on a date for a Police Community Update meeting and public secondary plan meeting, both for September/October.

Mountsberg Baptist Church Recycling Fundraiser

When: On now until Saturday August 31, 2019

Where: Mountsberg Baptist Church, 241 Campbellville Road

Mountsberg Baptist Church is holding a scrap metal and electronics drive - t here is a bin in the church parking lot where people can drop off anything made out of metal and unwanted electronics. Scrap metal collected includes bicycles, lawnmowers, large and small appliances, vacuums, toasters, kettles, pots and pans, tools, metal file cabinets – anything metal. Electronics collected include old tv’s, phones, computers, printers, cellular devices, various cords for audio/video systems. Weekly BBQ Fundraiser at Turkstra Lumber

When: Fridays during the summer

Join the community for a weekly summer BBQ fundraiser at Turkstra Lumber in Waterdown for $5 ! For the past five years, Turkstra has sponsored a weekly summer barbecue for Flamborough Connects, which supports programs, events and activities for residents in need - from youth to seniors. This year, Turkstra is spreading the wealth and we are delighted to welcome Eagle's Nest Association of Waterdown to the picnic table. Combining efforts to raise funds for multiple community programs that directly support community success is a great way to engage more participation and increase funding. Waterdown Farmers' Market

When: Saturdays, rain or shine!

Time: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

Where: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 551, 79 Hamilton Street North, Waterdown
The Waterdown Farmers' Market is back on Saturday mornings from 8am-1pm in the Waterdown Legion Parking lot. Enjoy a wide variety of farm vendors representing a mix of organic and conventional practices, as well as delicious on-site prepared food and beverage vendors, live music, kids’ activities and free parking.

Dairy Queen Blizzard Day Fundraiser

When: Thursday August 8, 2019

Where: Waterdown Dairy Queen, 233 Dundas Street East

One of our local hero families is Jayne Scala, the Waterdown Dairy Queen. Once again, the Waterdown DQ is hosting this very generous community event where 100% of the blizzard sales that day will help fund  critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment and research to benefit the children receiving lifesaving treatment at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Previous years were a huge success - come on over to Dairy Queen on Thursday August 8, 2019 for lots of fun entertainment and Blizzards!

Movie in the Park by Community Church

Garlic Festival at West Avenue Cider House

Where: West Avenue Cider House, 84 Concession 8 East, Freelton

On Sunday August 11 from 12-6, West Avenue Cider is having their annual Garlic Gala! We organically grew 10,000 garlic bulbs so that you can stock up on this wonder food and know exactly where it came from. New this year they have a mini makers market with a half dozen vendors- and lots of delicious food by Cascata Bistro, Maisy's Pearl fresh shucked oysters and Bake Labs fresh grilled sourdough garlic bread. Come hungry! Plus an Organic farmers market Greengreens Urban Farm and Gardens Pure-N-Simple Farm. Not to forget they are launching a brand new cider- ‘Rhineapple’ 9.5%. She’s a 35% Niagara Riesling/ 65% Heritage apple bombshell of a cider and the perennial favourite JuiceBox Blueberry 5.5%. And for the wee ones (and some of our bartenders) there’s a crazy cow bouncy castle thing!  Kids welcome, free entry and lots of parking.

Mountsberg Conservation Area- Amazing Things To Do Before You're 12

Waterdown Legion Riders & North Wall Riders Toy Ride

Back by popular demand, the Waterdown Legion Riders will be partnering with the North Wall Riders to organize a toy ride for local children, that ties into the Waterdown Legion's annual corn roast. The day's schedule starts at the Royal Coachman Pub for breakfast, a country ride and returning to the Waterdown Legion for the corn roast. Textiles Day at Westfield Heritage Village

When: Sunday August 18, 2019

Time: 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Where: Westfield Heritage Village, 1049 Kirkwall Rd, Rockton

Come to Westfield Heritage Village and enjoy learning how different types of textile fibers are produced and used. Watch the labour-intensive process that transforms the coarse flax plant into a material that can be used to make lovely linen fabric. Join the community for the Waterdown Legion's Annual Corn Roast and BBQ with entertainment provided by Mike Hubley - KountryFryd Music. There will be Hamburgers, Sausages, Hot Dogs, Popcorn, fresh corn and displays to enjoy - come out for a fun afternoon, bring your friends and kids and your chairs! This event is in support of your local Legion. Mike Hubley will be playing a unique blend of country music old and new with a side of rock ‘n roll oldies! Rotary Food4Kids Brunch Fundraiser

Come and enjoy a tasty brunch prepared by community members and the volunteers of the Rotary Club of Waterdown in support of Food4Kids Hamilton-Halton and other Rotary projects on Saturday September 14 inside the Legion. It is running in conjunction with the Waterdown Farmers' Market so come and have your breakfast to support this worthwhile event - cost is by donation. Then, feel free to walk outside and enjoy the market!

100+ Women Who Care Flamborough/Waterdown Program Meeting

When: Wednesday September 18, 2019

Time: 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Where: Grace Anglican Church Hall, 157 Mill Street North, Waterdown
Please join Councillor Partridge at the next meeting of the Flamborough-Waterdown Chapter of 100 Women Who Care program. The program intends to bring together 100 (or more) women in Flamborough-Waterdown who care about local community causes and who are committed to community service. At the meetings, women will meet for an hour and jointly select a local charity or not-for-profit organization. Everyone will each write a $100 cheque to the selected organization and watch how the group’s commitment turns into a $10,000+ donation. Do that four times a year and witness how $40,000 can improve the lives of our neighbours when placed in the hands of deserving grass-roots agencies working to serve the local community. Song of the Grand - Roast Beef Dinner and Musical

Flamborough Chili Fest 2019

When: Tuesday September 24, 2019

Where: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 551, 79 Hamilton Street North, Waterdown, ON

The annual Flamborough Chili Fest is back! Bring the family for this popular fundraising event where local restaurants serve amazing varieties of chili for everyone to taste and vote for best tasting, best decorated etc. It also includes raffle prizes, silent auction, live entertainment, children's activities and much more. Chili Fest is a major fundraiser for the Flamborough Women's Resource Centre- all proceeds go directly to supporting programs for women and their families dealing with family crisis. Volunteers are still needed, including set up (10am) and take down (7:30pm). Please contact coordfwrc@intervalhousehamilton.org if you're able to assist with this year's event (also a great opportunity for students to get a jump start on their volunteer hours early in the school year!).

Free Salsa Dancing on the Waterfront

When: Tuesdays until August 27, 2019

Where: Hamilton Waterfront Trust Outdoor Rink, 47 Discovery Drive, Hamilton
SalsaSoul Productions promotes social dancing among the Hamilton community and their passion is salsa and Latin dances. During the summer, they organize outdoor meet-ups, so dancers can enjoy music and good company in a friendly and healthy environment. All are welcome. There are no restrictions on level of dancing or age. This is a free event for the public. Salsa on the Waterfront takes place every Tuesday until August 27, weather permitting. Cipher-Decipher Exhibition at Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

This exciting interactive 3D exhibition, Cipher-Decipher, will be on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope from now until September 29, from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm daily. This exhibition is for all ages to enjoy, and explores the past and present of communications cryptology - what it is, how it works and how it affects our lives. See an authentic Enigma cipher machine or try your hand at logic puzzles and games to see if you have what it takes to work in the field of cryptology!
