January 2024 Newsletter

"At City Hall for my Oath Taking as a second-term Lynn City Councilor. As I left my house and was putting my tie, I was emotional and shed some tear for not having my parents and family here. I know these are challenges of some immigrants like me of not having your immediate family around, but i know all the families I created here in Lynn will be around to cheer me on tonight. Let’s do this! It's a great honor to serve the people of Ward 3 and Lynn" (My post on Facebook before my inauguration, and indeed all my friends and my adopted families were around that evening to cheer me on. Thank you, Jan. 2, 2024)

2024 is Year of the Dragon

Hello fellow Ward 3 residents, it is January and the start of a brand new year. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon in Chinese Zodiac sign and believe it or not, this is the luckiest year of all zodiac signs. Ok, obviously I'm into this stuff :-)

As a reminder, these newsletters are posted on the last week of every month, so in that way I can fully report everything that happened on that specific month. This month I was sworn in as your Ward 3 Councilor together with my fellow Councilors, after the swearing in, we immediately went to work, we rolled up our sleeves and faced different challenges including combatting snow/ice storms. I am grateful that these are not my first snow storms, I feel bad for the new Councilors but they are very committed to learn. I have been there so I know how challenging it was for them, but I am glad that the relationship we built, I was able to guide them and help them as they navigate the complex system of being the mediator of our residents and City Hall. I know we need to do more to combat snow storm, my role as Councilor unfortunately is very limited so I will try my very best to always maximize it, advocate for you, and help find ways to make it easier for all of us.

This month, I introduced the sister-city program. The goal of the sister city program is to support goodwill and friendship with a foreign city. A lot of these cities are connected due to a common interest or common goal so It’s really important that we can share with other countries and learn from other countries. We don’t have to spend money because some other countries will send some of their programs or people to our cities to visit out of goodwill. My proposal that was approved by the Council this month is basically asking the Mayor and the City Attorney to research more about this. I just feel like this is something Lynn could benefit from moving forward. Let's wait for the mayor's recommendation on this soon, of course there will be opportunity for the public to speak on this before we adopt this program. An editorial by Stuart Foster of Daily Item was printed on Jan. 22, 2024 - link to editorial Another helpful link - 45 Cities and towns in MA have this program

In our ward, we resolved 24 projects, it's a busy month considering it's the first month of the year. We can discuss some of it and other project updates during our Ward 3 Neighborhood Meeting on January 31 at 7pm.

At our Jan. 23, 2024 Council meeting, we voted to take a bond of $166 Million for the new Pickering School, i have some reservations and a lot of questions, but most of it were answered by the Mayor and could be found here - https://pickeringmsbuildingproject.com/.

I voted yes because I support our kids and will support our city's goal to build new schools for our children. That's where I stand, and I always stand by that commitment.

On a personal note, I would like to thank my fellow City Councilors for voting me to be a Commissioner of the Lynn Water and Sewer Commission as the City Councilor-representative to this important Lynn organization. I will try my very best to serve this board, and be a good representative of my colleagues.

All in all, this month is busy but everything is manageable, thanks to our Ward 3 Team for always being there to assist or sometimes listen to me vent hahaha (just being human here), they are always there to comfort and lend advice which I appreciate so much. Lastly, I really want you to take time to read some of our ward and city announcements, below. I want you to be pro-active and volunteer your time in attending some of these meetings and workshops and help our city.

38th Annual MLK Breakfast organized by Lynn Community Minority Cultural Center (Jan. 15, 2024)

I joined fellow City Councilors Nicole McClain, Natasha Megie-Maddrey, Esq., and Obed Matul, as we listen and learned about the new project to bring Affordable Housing to a city-owned site in the downtown area.(Jan. 18, 2024)

Together with Ward 6 Councilor Fred Hogan and Ward 2 Councilor Obed Matul, for a quick meeting after Councilor Hogan and I drove around our wards to check the surroundings. (Jan. 19, 2024)

I joined fellow Councilors Obed Matul, and Natasha Megie-Maddrey, as we attended the inaugural meeting of the 2024 Lynn School Committee of Lynn Public Schools. Their first meeting of 2024 and it’s so nice to be here and to be able to support them. (Jan. 11, 2024)

It is important for us officials to listen to our workers. I am very happy to attend a meeting with all of our winter snow chasers and Ice contractors, listen to their concerns and suggestions on how we can better serve you, our residents. I learned a lot tonight, I also learned that the system that i’ve seen doing is not that effective to them, I cannot just submit a name of the street but i have to cluster them from precincts 1-4 so they don’t have to waste precious time and drive longer and trying to figure out the name to the map. I have to do more work and highlight them in a map so they can go there directly without wasting precious time. (Jan. 10, 2024)

I attended my last meeting as Member of the Lynn Community Television Board this month. My last day as a board member and as Vice-President. It's been a very good experience and I love working with these fine people, former Ward 4 Councilor and Council President Bob Tucker, former Ward 1 Councilor Joe Scanlon, Former Ward 3 Councilor and Council President, Dick Coppinger, Lynn Housing's Rosario Fresco, and not in the photo is Ward 3 Precinct Captain Bonnie Carr. They are not only my colleagues but my friends and mentors. Also to all the Staff and supporters. For 4 years, I served this board with all of my heart, but since I will be taking more Council assignments, I have to leave LCTV so I can focus with these new assignments. Thank you, everyone. It's been a good ride. (Jan. 8, 2024)

At Sanghikaram Wat Khmer Temple near Goldfish Pond as I joined our Khmer community to pray for Kyle Mel and for peace for Lynn. (Jan. 7, 2024)

A selfie with fellow Councilors Matul, McClain, Hogan, and Megie-Maddrey on our official First Lynn Council Meeting (Jan. 9, 2024)

I joined fellow Lynn City Councilors Obed Matul and Pete Meaney with Lynn School Committee Member Sean Reid as we volunteered with the Community Warmth Project group distributing scarfs and gloves to our community. Please be informed that we will leave this up here outside My Brother's Table until 6pm today, so please help yourself. (Jan. 6, 2024)

Special dinner to honor our former fellow City Council colleagues Wayne Lozzi, and Rick Starbard. Thank you for the 2 years of working relationship with both of you. (Note: Former Councilor Colucci is not feeling well tonight, so he missed this event. Feel better), Jan. 4, 2024

We started the New Year’s to support my colleagues and all the participants and organizers of this year’s Annual Freezin for a Reason Polar Plunge event to support the Bagley Family this year. Love this tradition and brought everyone to rally in support of a fellow Lynn family. Happy New Year, everyone (Jan. 1, 2024)

Honored to perform together with Councilor McClain and Councilor Megie-Maddrey on Raw Art Works movie project for one of her poems organized by Ward 3 resident Michelle Richardson. It's amazing to see so many talents from our youth at Raw Arts. Congratulations! (Jan. 23, 2024)

The BIG Home Show!!! an event by the Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce showcasing local contractors, masons, electricians, HVAC, interior decorators/designers, home décor, cabinetry, flooring, and much more! (Jan. 27, 2024)

I joined fellow Lynn City officials as we welcome a new business to Lynn on their ribbon-cutting ceremony today. Pluto Cannabis located on 193 Oxford St., Lynn. Congratulations also to Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce for organizing. (Jan. 26, 2024)

HAPPY 15th ANNIVERSARY North Shore Adult Day Health Center, a community-based program which provides a variety of medical, therapeutic, rehabilitative and recreation services for older adults, seniors and individuals with disabilities. (Jan. 26, 2024)

My husband Peter and I are very happy to support the Winter Invitational Jamboree, a Special Olympics Basketball Program exhibition games from across the North Shore, including Lynn. Good job to my good friend Dalene Basden for organizing. Congratulations to all the participants and supporters.(Jan. 28, 2024)

Our Activities this month inside Ward 3

Thank you to fellow Ward 3 resident Michelle Guzman for coming to my house and brought us some home cooked meal while we talked about how to support and work with the Lynn Teen Center which is located technically in our ward, but this is a Lynn youth program with program goals includes: Homework Help & Tutoring, Career Exploration, Job Opportunities and Readiness, Skill Building, Improving English Language Skills, Exploring post-secondary pathways that aren’t college, College Application and Financial Aid Support https://leap4ed.org/programs/teen-center-lynn/ (Jan. 17, 2024)

We drove around the ward again to inspect the work of our ground crew and meet some of our residents. We noticed that some areas look way better than others, we acknowledged that there are still streets that need more salting and sanding, so I created my own list based on my observation. (Jan. 8, 2024)

We resolved 24 projects from fixing lights, traffic signs, litter, over-grown trees, potholes and many more. I know there's more to be done, but we keep pushing, so if you see something wrong in our ward, I strongly recommend you to report it to me ASAP.

NEW LYNN POLICE OFFICER FROM WARD 3: I am honored to witness the oath-taking ceremony of our new Lynn Police Department Officers, including a Ward 3 resident from Eastern Avenue. Welcome and Congratulations Officer Justin Kim (Jan. 11, 2024)

𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝟯 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗦 𝟭𝟯𝟱 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦! I joined Mayor Jared Nicholson, fellow City Councilor Nicole McClain, and Lynn School Committee Sean Reid, as we attended the 135th Year celebration of this Ward 3 church on 233 Eastern Avenue, Lynn Church of the Nazarene. Congratulations to Pastor Gina Maurice and her team, what a beautiful celebration and a memorable day. (Jan. 21, 2024)

In the early morning of 1am, these East Lynn Councilors are still up checking our respective wards for any issues and concerns. I invited these new Councilors to our ward as we all learned from each other and inspect challenging areas in East Lynn, including our ward #Ward1 #Ward2 #Ward3 #Ward4 #OnTheJobTraining (Jan. 7, 2024)

Thank you to our City of Lynn Fire Department and to our 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐃𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐧 for acting very quick to fix our flag on Goldfish Pond today. It was so windy this past few days and our 8x12 flag is hanging on one string only. They came just right in time. Thank you, everyone (Jan. 23, 2024)

CONGRATULATIONS to the D'Amico Family represented by North Shore fisherman 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁 𝗗’𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗼 of Melvin Avenue for winning the 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟛 𝕎𝕒𝕣𝕕 𝟛 ℍ𝕠𝕝𝕚𝕕𝕒𝕪 ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖 𝔻𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕣 ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕤𝕥. This presentation was just beautiful using 145 lobster traps to create a beautiful Christmas tree for the neighborhood to marvel, and to recognize the importance of the fishing industry and the fishermen in this part of the State and the cultural significance of the sea in Lynn and in the Northshore. This year's theme is all about recycling and using recycling materials as part of the decoration. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬!

A couple of our residents basements (two homes) from Erie and Michigan Streets were flooded this month. Our folks from Lynn Water & Sewer Commission came to assist them and flushed out all the pipes surrounding these streets. Councilor Fred Hogan and I joined our ground crew this afternoon and observed the whole process. I got a lesson from them and also get to see them in action. I can't believe the amount of time, manpower and resources just to help these families. You know what's one of the culprits, dumping of used cooking oil to your sink. It's really gross guys and makes their job very hard. I myself love frying stuff from chicharones to eggrolls but I always save my used cooking oil into a jar and never dump them into our sinks. Anyways, thank you, everyone and keep up the good work. (Jan. 22, 2024)

I got an email from a resident on Fearless Avenue and Crescent St. "𝐇𝐢 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐨, 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐨, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧. 𝐈 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤. 𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭."........ so sweet of you to send me this message, but this is a team effort, always remember that my role as your ward councilor is your link to our city services, I am just your connection to City Hall. Our staff deserves all the accolades for making this work the soonest possible time. Thank you so much Joe Smart and Mark Raftery. You guys are the (real) best! (Jan. 25, 2024)

"Greetings neighbors. Happy New Year! I am excited to inform you all that we applied for a grant from the Lynn Cultural Council to support our vision of a safe, clean and beautiful space at the lot at 109 Lewis Street and I've just learned that the Council has approved our request! Of course it is winter and we won't be actively digging up there until spring, so stay tuned for details. The funds will allow us to build up the soil, plant two pollinator gardens, a pumpkin and sunflower patch as well as install rain barrels for watering and a solar powered bird bath to further support the pollinators and birds who will soon have a reliable little habitat in our hood. Huge thank you to Coco Alinsug, to Brickett Elementary PTO and Amy Butterworth for constant forward thinking and collaboration, to the Lynn Cultural Council for seeing the value of the project. - By Shanna Blaney, Coordinator, Brickett Community Group

𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝟑 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒:

I am very excited to announce that our official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/cocoalinsug have reached 5,000 members this month. I would personally like to thank all of you for being a part of it. I am very grateful for all of your continued support. From all of us, Thank you all so much from me and my team. (January 13, 2024)

𝙇𝙔𝙉𝙉 𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙇𝙇𝙀𝙉𝙂𝙀 𝘾𝙊𝙄𝙉: At an event this month where we invited to speak, I was approached by Lynn Fire Chief Dan Sullivan and handed me this coin with the wording "Serving the Citizens of Lynn", I was puzzled and confused since I have no idea what is the significance of the coin, nor the background story of this tradition. The Chief explained the history of the "Challenge Coin" and he said if somebody hand you one, that means you're doing something good. "𝐈 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭…𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩." he said,.. awwww, Thank you, Chief. I am so honored. (Jan. 26, 2024)

This meeting will end with Q and A with me and our guests.

We have a very famous word in the Philippines that we always use every time there's a problem and/or issues. The word is "BAYANIHAN" Pronounced like "buy-uh-nee-hun," bayanihan is a Filipino word derived from the word bayan meaning town, nation, or community in general. "Bayanihan" literally means, "being a bayan," and is thus used to refer to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation.

Now that I shared some Filipino words here for you to learn, let's grab the spirit of "bayanihan" to help each other. We need to do this together, so big favor from you guys, if you see this blue barrel near you, blue sand barrels are distributed across the City for residents to use and take an active role in preventing slipping and skidding on sidewalks, driveways, and streets. Please check the content and if it needs refilling, please comment below or call DPW the exact location at 781.268.8000 so we will make sure we're prepared and ready for the next snowstorm. Thanks all. #unity #community #ward3

HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY and REST IN PEACE, MARY! Councilor Brian LaPierre and Lynn School Committee Member Lorraine Gately and I are scheduled to visit her in the afternoon of Jan. 27 to deliver this citation (among other citations) to honor her 100th birthday, only to found out that she peacefully passed away the night before. We were shocked and sad, this Ward 3 woman is like a family to us where we spent years and years working with either in the Lynn schools or at the neighborhood of Goldfish Pond, where we are both active members. I still remember when I first met her 21 years ago, she gave me a sandwich during planting day and told me "I saved that for you", I will always remember that. We love you, Mary. Thank you for your service to Lynn

CONGRATULATIONS to a Ward 3 resident from Lafayette Park Tanveer Malik on his appointment as a member of the Lynn Food Policy Council.
