Jesus said, " I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  John 8:12
Counseling Corner February 4, 2019

Dear CLHS Parents and Guardians:

May Jesus be our Redeemer, Guide, Shepherd - and message and purpose today!

In fulfilling our mission of Proclaiming Jesus Christ through Excellence in Education , our first priority is providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment in which the pursuit of our mission, Proclaiming Jesus Christ Through Excellence in Education is possible.  As partners in the education of students, it is important that we are aware of what they are watching on television, reading through various social media accounts, as well as what they are discussing.  This knowledge opens the door for important conversations centered on topics that interest them. It also provides an opportunity for parents to offer support and guidance in real-time matters.

Over the recent months, an account was discovered via Instagram entitled, 'Crean Confessions' in which students are given a platform to post their anonymous 'confessions'.  It is through these 'confessions' that some concerning content has been identified.  This account has no direct link to the CLHS ministry that we've been able to identify, yet it is possible that it could be authored by somebody in our community.  Furthermore, administration is working in partnership with law enforcement to learn more about who and why this account was created and how it can be stopped. It is our understanding that other schools in the area have identified similar accounts.

Student activity on social media is an ever changing forum. Because of this, social media accounts come and go and our ability to track all student activity is challenged.  As a school ministry, Crean Lutheran guides and encourages students to engage online in a Christ-like manner. When such social media is available for our students and spurs conversation on various sensitive and serious topics, it is crucial for us to be available. As educators and parents, we must listen, provide support, and be ready with knowledge and resources to help guide youth.

Our prayer at this time is that we may successfully partner together in ensuring that our students understand how to respond to and interact with social media.  To help foster this partnership, we ask you to continue dialoguing at home with your students about their use of social media and monitor their accounts. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's counselor or to the Dean of Students.

In Christ,

Crean Lutheran High School

Tip of The Week
Offer choices! Being a dictator is not always the most effective way to build a relationship with your teen. It can prevent communication and promote rebellion. Sometimes it helps to offer your kids choices. By offering options your child feels like he or she has some control. Allow your teen the chance to help you in the decision-making process. Not only will it foster respect, but it will also teach your child how to make better decisions.
