Counting down to Canberra

This time next week the industry will be gathered at the Ann Harding Conference Centre in Canberra, taking part in the annual info-fest that is the Australian National Olive Conference & Exhibition. We’re all really excited about the great program being presented, and looking forward to catching up with old friends and colleagues, and meeting new ones.

And we’ll also be counting down the hours to the announcement of the 2023 Australian International Olive Awards major winners, being presented next Friday night – will you take home the business-changing Best of Show Award?

Congratulations to all of this year’s medal-winning entrants, and best of luck to all in the running for the big ones!

Note: if you’re registered to attend the Conference and/or AIOA Dinner, look out for emails over the next few days with important details such as registration times, dress code and bus schedules for transport between venues.

Water carters work around the clock as drought-ravaged dams and tanks run dry in Hunter Valley

Alix Merrick says the speed at which the drought has hit has caught people off guard. (Supplied: Alix Merrick).

Water carters are working around the clock as drought conditions start to bite across the New South Wales Hunter Valley. The NSW Department of Primary Industries has declared parts of the Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook and Singleton LGAs as drought-affected while parts of the Lower Hunter are in drought.

We hope olive growers in the region have some reserves in storage and are as prepared as you can be for the dry months ahead.

Fertiliser industry grapples with decarbonising its entire supply chain without risking food supply

Australia's fertiliser industry is working to decarbonise without compromising the country's $90 billion agriculture industry. Green ammonia, incentives to use nitrate inhibitors, and domestic fertiliser production are all being touted as possible solutions to the massive challenge of reducing emissions from fertilisers, which farmers say are essential to feeding a growing population.

National Farmers Federation aims to increase female leadership in Australian agriculture

Women weren't legally considered farmers until 1994 and, while progress has been made, they are still under-represented in leadership roles. It is an issue National Farmers Federation (NFF) president Fiona Simson says she has been working on.

Fruit fly season risk in Tasmania

Queensland fruit fly (left) and mature Mediterranean fruit fly (Images: DPIRD WA).

Spring and summer are the peak seasons for fruit fly activity on mainland Australia and a time of increased risk for Tasmania, so Biosecurity Tasmania is asking all Tasmanians to be on the lookout for anything strange they may find in fruit.

Fruit flies lay eggs in a wide range of fruits and fruiting vegetables. Tell-tale signs to look out for include live larvae or eggs in the flesh of the fruit or small puncture marks on the skin of the fruit.

Anyone who notices any larvae in fruit is asked to put the fruit in a sealed bag or container and place it in the refrigerator, then contact Biosecurity Tasmania on 03 6165 3777. Please DO NOT dispose of any fruit that has larvae in it.

New technology for farmers that works in the bush helps improve sustainability and credentials

Australia relies on access to overseas markets for agricultural exports, but farmers are being asked to prove they are producing food sustainably to maintain that access. Some of the technology to do that has been failing, particularly when it comes to farm robots and artificial intelligence, but that is beginning to change.

GROWER TO GROWER

Have a question? Need some advice? Ask a fellow grower!

The FOE team regularly hears from growers with questions about grove or production practices, or equipment, that they just can’t find the answers to. They’re things other producers are likely know about and/or experienced themselves. So we’ve set up a new Friday Olive Extracts feature, Grower to Grower, where you can send your questions and have them answered by your peers.

Just send the details to editor@olivegrower.com.au and we’ll put them out to the Friday Olive Extracts community - that’s thousands of readers across the globe.

Mapping Australia's groundwater

The Australian Government is working to secure Australia's future water resources through a first of its kind stock take of the nation’s underground water reservoirs. The National Hydrogeological Inventory, developed by Geoscience Australia, has mapped Australia's major groundwater-bearing basins and geological provinces, painting a picture of the communities, industries and environments that rely on groundwater.

Opportunities

Making sense of soil indicators

Soil CRC researchers at Federation University, in partnership with Charles Sturt University and the University of Newcastle, are examining how farmers use soil indicators to inform and support their farming practices.

Soil indicators are the observations, assessments and measurements farmers use to gauge soil health. These indicators help farmers understand how soil is performing for different enterprises and regions.

The research is part of Soil CRC’s ‘Matching soil performance indicators to farming systems’ project, led by Dr Nathan Robinson from Federation University. Dr Robinson said the project aims to help growers, advisers and scientists identify what indicators work best and where.

Get involved

Farmers, producers, advisors and others working in the agriculture sector are encouraged to participate in this research by completing a 10-minute online survey about what soil indicators are used, how often they are used, and what has informed soil indicator choices.

Find out more on Dr Robinson’s research overview video here and complete the online survey here
