Campus News

Last night was our Faculty and Staff Achievement Celebration, where we looked ahead to summer research and acknowledged employee anniversaries and accomplishments. While this event always offers much to celebrate, there are three award winners I’d like to give special mention to:

Rose O’Toole Staff Recognition Award: Tonya Howe, Athletics Office Manager

BVM Core Values Award: Dr. Aimee Taylor, Acting Chair of First-Year Studies and Director of First-Year Writing

Meneve Dunham Award for Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Lisa Rettenmeier, Chair and Professor of Nursing

These individuals (pictured above) exemplify what it means to contribute to the common good and their dedication to Clarke, its students, and our community as a whole cannot be overstated. Please join me in congratulating them again and thanking them for the exceptional work they do!

While last evening was focused on faculty and staff, several events are coming up for all to enjoy. Tonight is an academic doubleheader, with the Tenth Muse Launch Party in the Mary Frances Hall Solarium at 5:30 p.m. and the Religion and Science Lecture beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumnae Lecture Hall. Both promise interesting insights and are free to attend.

Then, this Saturday is Clarke Fest, our 5th Annual Block Party on Clarke Drive. From 4-7 p.m., join us for food and games, live performances from the Clarke Jazz Ensemble, and student art pieces for sale.

Looking ahead, the Board of Trustees will be on campus May 1 and 2, and the following week brings more celebrations with the Honors Banquet and Commencement, which I’ll highlight in my next update.

Strategic Plan Update

The last of our faculty and staff strategic plan forums was held on Wednesday, April 16. Over the summer, the strategic plan committee will review the insights gathered from these sessions and assess what items in the strategic plan have been completed, are in progress, or still need development to take Clarke University to 2030.

Living our Legacy Spotlight

Dr. Aimee Taylor, Chair of First-Year Studies and Director of First-Year Writing, is in this volume’s spotlight.

Living our legacy stems from our mission:

Clarke University is a Catholic academic community that believes learning is lifelong and life changing. We inspire intellectual curiosity, cultural engagement, professional preparedness, spiritual exploration, and a commitment to contributing to the common good in a global society.

In her time with the Clarke community, Aimee has made a significant impact on her peers and students alike. With kindness and patience, she coached many students on their writing through the Academic Support Center before taking on the role of Acting Chair of First-Year Studies and Director of First-Year Writing this year. There, she has led Compass courses and worked with students on an individual level to prepare them not just for academic success in college, but to grow as a whole person.

Her efforts were recognized this year when her peers presented her with the BVM Core Values Award. Her nominator wrote:

“Aimee is an incredible person doing amazing work for Clarke. Her dedication to students, to justice, and to helping this University become stronger make her the perfect person to nominate for this award. She is unfailingly optimistic about what Clarke can achieve and has been instrumental in student success, both at a personal and institutional level, and she is always open to collaboration and doing what is best for students across departments and campus . . . This year she has gone above and beyond [by] stepping into the role of Chair of First-Year Studies.”

Thank you, Aimee, for consistently demonstrating the core values in each of your interactions with students, faculty, and staff.

Go Pride!
