e-NEWS BLAST

A message from Governor Liz Glowka:

Happy May,

It’s May and Spring Conferences are underway throughout the federation. The Golden West Region Board of Directors, the Pillars, the Spring Conference committee, and many others are working hard to give us a very special conference. You may miss out if you haven’t registered and secured your hotel room. The deadline is May 14, 2025, so get your friends and clubmates together and arrange to join in the fun. Share your pictures on social media during and after the conference using the hashtags #GWR2025SC and #SIARegionConference2025.

Registration and SIA’s friendly competition for the Leadership Round Table drawing are open. SIA has set a goal for the Golden West Region to have 22 members signed up to be eligible for the $500.00 drawing. As of 4-15-2025, one member was registered. Please see the SIA website for additional information. While on the website, look at the information for the second class of the Soroptimist Leadership Fellows Program. Consider joining to deepen and enrich your leadership skills.

Are you keeping Soroptimist UpliftHER in your club planning? This quarter is Period Poverty. I often hear our clubs discussing that many women and girls face difficulty accessing or affording essential period products. Now is the time for your clubs to brainstorm and organize projects to raise awareness or directly support women and girls facing this obstacle.

Please travel safely to Fort McDowell, AZ. I look forward to seeing you all in June.

Governor Liz

Hello Soroptimists,

The GWR Ad hoc Online Club Chartering Committee remains hopeful that the many communication strategies already in motion, combined with future promotions, will lead to the chartering of Golden West Region’s first all-region online Soroptimist club. We are thrilled to share the following updates since our last progress report in February:

  • Our online club informational and recruitment documents have been downloaded 801 times—that's 249 more than reported in February’s News Blast. Could these “seeds” of interest be sprouting? We remain optimistic!
  • A prospective member from Taos, New Mexico continues to show interest in online club membership and has registered to attend our GWR 2025 Spring Conference to learn more about Soroptimist and our fabulous region.

We are also excited to see new members being installed during this 2024-2025 club year across our region’s existing clubs. Keep up that momentum! However, if you encounter objections during recruitment or win-back efforts, consider whether online Soroptimist club membership could be the perfect solution to help increase our region’s membership.

I encourage all members to explore the GWR Online Club Informational Package, which offers details about how a region-wide online Soroptimist club might align with a prospective member’s lifestyle and passion for helping women and girls live their dreams.

If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me. Together, we can help Grow and Glow our membership—because teamwork truly makes the dream work!

Governor-elect Pat

MAY'S UpliftHER Focus is on Period Poverty.

What causes period poverty?

Stigma: Cultural taboos and misconceptions about menstruation that lead to shame and misinformation.

High Cost of Menstrual Products: Many women and girls cannot afford sanitary products due to financial constraints. They are taxed as luxury items in many places despite being a necessity.

Lack of Water and Sanitation Facilities: Inadequate access to clean water and sanitation hampers proper menstrual hygiene management.

Clubs can participate in the quarterly project focus by sharing SIA posts and posting their own projects with the hashtag #SoroptimistsUpliftHER.
