Lame Duck Farm Bill Passage Won’t Be Easy, Analysts Say
Successful Farming’s Chuck Abbott reported recently that “the lame-duck session of Congress offers a last chance to enact the new farm bill this year, but it would require compromise on a number of nettlesome policy disputes and an agreement among House and Senate leaders on how much to spend, said farm policy experts. Trump Names Lee Zeldin to Lead EPA, Stephen Miller to be Deputy Chief of Policy
President-elect Donald Trump on Monday named former New York congressman Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency as he continues to build out his future administration with loyal supporters. Zeldin would “ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet,” Trump said in a statement. Deadline Approaches to File CTA Reports
As discussed in an earlier alert, the Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”) went into effect January 1, 2024, requiring most legal entities in the United States to file a beneficial ownership information report (“BOI Report”) with the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”). Before January 1, 2025, all covered entities must file a BOI Report through FinCEN’s electronic filing system. This alert summarizes the CTA rule and highlights some best practices for reporting companies moving forwards. MORE

USDA Bans School Lunch Fees for Low-Income Families
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals cannot be charged processing fees beginning in 2027. School districts currently work with processing companies to offer cashless payment systems for families. However, the companies can charge "processing fees" for each transaction. By law, students who are eligible for reduced-price meals cannot be charged more than 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch. MORE

With Tuesday’s election expected to produce a 67-67 tie in the Minnesota House of Representatives, DFL and GOP leaders said Wednesday they are looking now at ways to share power. The Minnesota Constitution forbids the House from having two House speakers at the same time, so it’s possible Republicans and DFLers may divide up which party takes the speakership and which holds lead positions on key committees.
