Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 5 No. 41| November 3, 2023

What a week! Some good stuff, some not so great, but a much-needed, spirit-lifting highlight was the Million Dollar Quartet matinee at Riverside Theatre Wednesday. Some people will leave early to get to the parking lot before everyone else, but when you go, don't be like them or you'll miss what could be the finale of the season! You have about a week left to see it.

If you're responsible for promoting an arts-related event, send in details using the format at the end of this email. There's no charge for basic calendar listings but your advertising flyer that includes a link to your website will do more to catch readers' attention. Email for advertising information in Arts Blast and Arts Blast on the Air.

Please support small, local businesses. Arts Blast is one of them, so if you have an event coming up, or something artsy to sell or teach, consider advertising it in Arts Blast!

And So It Goes - Camilo A. Rodriguez

Ballet Vero Beach returns to the Vero Beach Museum of Art November 11 with a performance created for the occasion by the BVB ballet master, Camilo A. Rodriguez. His assignment — Create a work that would complement the M.C. Escher exhibition, at the museum through December 30.

Rodriguez explained: "Depth of field, repetition, perspectives, patterns, symmetry and asymmetry, and transformation -- trompe l'oeil -- are common themes in Escher's work. So that was my starting point....ultimately the themes become cyclical, 'And So It Goes,' just like in life, or life itself.

He said he thinks of it more as images that suggest, "rather than a story per se; however, there is a mini story inside the dance: boy and girl meet, fall in love, grow old together... new couples meet... and so it goes."

The music is all Erik Satie. "I put together a soundtrack or score with various Satie's pieces like Je te veux, Gnossienne 5, 3, and 1 and two short valses. And just like in Escher works, the tracks follow a pattern, a cyclical pattern, we ascend to a midpoint and then descend from there."

Tickets for the November 11 performance are available through Vero Beach Museum of Art.

Shop and Party at VB Museum of Art!

The Gifford Youth Orchestra (GYO), led by CEO Dr. Crystal Bujol and Executive Director Charles R. “Casey” Lunceford II, announces its 20th Annual Concert on Saturday, November 11, 2023 starting at 1pm at the Emerson Center in Vero Beach.

The concert features violin piano and voice students of all levels with beginner students starting at 1pm followed by the advanced students. Light refreshments will be served at a reception.

"So many wonderful things are happening with the Gifford Youth Orchestra,” said Dr. Bujol. “Amazing, beneficial, constructive things that will allow us to better serve the many eager and talented students coming through our portals. The GYO Board, Staff, and Teachers are thrilled to be expanding our classes and developing new curricula. We’re passionate about delivering our trademark brand of music education to enrich and empower the lives of more and more children. After 20 years of violins plus, we are once again delighted to invite everyone to our FREE annual concert.”

Established in 2003 by Dr. Bujol at the prompting of Gifford resident Annie Powell, GYO’s mission is to provide music education and training in various cultural and performing arts to the youth of Gifford and neighboring communities.

With a core focus on mastering stringed instruments, over 250 young people have had instruction opportunities in music, drama, and the vocal arts, with many of the students going on to enroll in or complete their college education. This year, Tatiana Wallace, one of our graduating seniors has already begun her studies at Indian River State College!

The 20th Annual Concert is FREE and will take place at the Emerson Center located at 1590 27th Avenue in Vero Beach. Beginner students will start the concert at 1pm followed by advanced students. A reception will be held subsequent to the concert. Donations will be accepted.

Open Mic and a Car Show at First Pres

It all started in August, only a few short months ago, but Open Mic nights at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach has become a hit with locals. Jacob Craig, director of music and arts at First Pres, gives full credit to Jessica Russell, director of Christian education.

Russell doesn't participate herself: "I'm not of any notable talent other than playing the guitar, accompanying singers." She isn't in the choir but she loves music and invites others "to join in with showcasing the music they love."

There are no age limits to sign ups. "We're looking for singing or instrumental acts. No tracks are allowed. All music must be live."

After November 4, the final Open Mic night for this year, the evenings will take a break for the Merry Little Variety Show in December but be back in full form second Tuesdays in January.
