Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 5 No. 48 | December 22, 2023

I'm very grateful in this holiday season to have friends who have taken over getting Arts Blast together while I take a Christmas break. They're learning just how huge a presence the arts have on the Treasure Coast as well as the areas we cover on Florida's west coast and in Brevard and North Palm Beach Counties.

Here's wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and the merriest of Christmases! Thanks for reading and sharing Arts Blast for going on five years!

This Arts Blast offers plenty of things to do but there are even more stacked up in my inbox to add to the Arts Blast calendar at willimiller.com. Keep checking in and take some time to relax and enjoy the season. I'd love to hear what you have planned for the new year.

Willi

Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne will open the new year with The World As I See It, the photo art of Jim Kalupa, a Wisconsin native living in Brevard County since 2005. Photography and travel are two of the great passions in his life. As a result, Kalupa said, he has covered much of the globe in well over forty years, always with camera in hand. While much of his work is travel inspired, most recently he has started capturing the beauty of his Florida home. He studied photography formally in the 1980s, but career obligations at the time required his full attention. Since moving to Florida, he’s become completely dedicated to his photo art which he views as a constant and evolving challenge.

The opening reception is January 5, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue Gallery,Melbourne.

JOLLY DAYS AT BREVARD ZOO

CALL FOR ART: ELEMENTS

"Elements" invites artists to capture the essence of Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind in a dynamic exhibition that explores their visual allure and transformative effects. Capture the elements in their purest form and reveal the transformative power they hold.

You must be a member of the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance in order to submit for this exhibition.

Submission Deadline January 5, 2024

Long before Bruce Springsteen became “The Boss,” a singing quartet from the streets of Belleville, New Jersey, set the world on fire with a unique sound that set them apart from other singing groups.

The Four Seasons became one of the best selling recording artists of the early and mid-1960s. With Frankie Valli’s soaring falsetto, the group had a string of more that 25 hits over a five-year period that began with “Sherry” in 1962. While their style of music fell out of fashion in the late 60s, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons experienced a musical resurgence in the mid-70s with hits songs “Who Loves You,” “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night),” and “My Eyes Adored You.”

Jersey Boys that tells the story of these four blue-collar kids from gritty and humble beginnings who achieved worldwide acclaim, selling millions of albums, sold out performances, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jersey Boys is at Riverside Theatre Jan 2-28.

MEMOIR OF A FOOD ADDICT: A SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS STORY

Former Indian River County Resident Publishes Memoir on Weight Loss Surgery Success

Ginger Lagemann struggled with her weight for many years. While working as a Music Educator in the Indian River County School District, she saw her body mass index slowly climb to forty-seven– signifying morbid obesity and triggering ominous warnings from her doctors. After years of dieting, exercise, medical weight loss programs, and gym memberships to no avail, Lagemann made the decision to have weight loss surgery. Her last-ditch effort became a life-changing odyssey, documented in this well-written, informative, and heavily researched book. Lagemann covers her history with fluctuating weight, catalysts for making her final decision, the surgical procedure itself and the recovery journey that followed.
