2022 Plan Eliminates Tennis Center Project.
The Tennis Community Must Speak Up
Anne Arundel County has completed a draft of the 2022 Land Preservation, Parks and Recreation Plan (LPPRP). The plan acts as a countywide master plan.

HERE IS WHAT IS IN THE NEW PLAN
1. For Tennis:
  • Abandoned: The Tennis Center project at the Millersville Park site.
  • Removed: $6.5M in construction funding for the Tennis Center at Millersville Park.
  • Tennis priority is pushed down to "Land Acquisition and Development:" $400,000 for studies and site search. $7M listed for future funding.
2. For "active" Facility Development Projects:
  • $8.0M for District 4 sports fields at the Millersville Park site replacing tennis
  • $34M for a 3rd Swim Center in West County
  • $17M for a 4th Swim Center in South County
  • $9.9M for a new clubhouse at Eisenhower Golf Course
  • $116M for an additional 40 capital projects to receive funding 2023 - 2027

THE COUNTY HAS REQUESTED COMMENTS ON THE PLAN
The Tennis Alliance objects to the County’s dismissal of the urgent public need for indoor tennis and the disregard for its own county process:
  • 8 years of project studies & approvals
  • 6 years of capital budget approvals
  • Need and demand identified in the 2013 LPPRP and 2017 LPPRP.

PUBLIC COMMENTS CAN BE SUBMITTED:
  • "Please prioritize and complete the tennis center project as promised."
  • Any brief statement is recorded as support for tennis.

Speak at a Zoom Townhall dedicated to public input on the 2022 LPPRP Plan.
The Tennis Center Project Can Move Foreword

County Executive Pittman has the authority to continue the Tennis Center project at Millersville Park.

The County's RFP (Request For Proposal) process failed to secure a qualified private sector partner to assist the County. The project and the approved site for tennis remain viable.

The absence of a private partner does not change the long-established need for the countywide project or the obligation of the County to get the promised project done.
The Need Remains

In 2020 the number of tennis players grew nationally by 22% - faster than pickleball. Tennis has over 21 million players (pickleball, 4.2 million). While we applaud Rec and Parks for supporting new and better facilities for sports in Anne Arundel County from swim centers to field sports to pickleball, we object to the 2022 LPPRP plan that sends tennis to the end of the line.

Our neighboring counties have 18 public indoor tennis centers providing programs for youth, adults, seniors. Anne Arundel County has none.
