Annual County Fair Returns for August 16th-19th
|
|
The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders in partnership with Friends of Passaic County Parks, Inc. will be hosting the Annual County Fair beginning Thursday August 16
th
and concluding on Sunday August 19
th
at Garret Mountain Reservation. The County Fair will be open from 6 pm-11 pm on Thursday and Friday, and 3 pm-11 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Festivities will include fireworks on Friday and Saturday, carnival rides, an array of food vendors, 4-H tent, beer garden, chess tournament, pony rides and petting zoos, and many other activities for families and children.
Thursday at the County Fair is Family Night. For $20, you can purchase a wrist band that allows unlimited access to all the rides at the fair, and if you want to take a break from the rides at 7 pm there will be a basketball exhibition between The Harlem Wizards as they face off against Passaic County Police Officers, Firefighters, and PCTI athletes.

Freeholders Approve $443,618 for the
Dey Mansion Garden Restoration Project
|
On June 26, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders voted to award a $443,618.55 contract for the Dey Mansion Garden Restoration Project. The Dey Mansion Gardens were designed by the famed Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architecture Firm in 1935, but it has been heavily degraded and only a few features of the design remain. The goal of the restoration project is to restore and retain the historical integrity of the original Olmsted design, while using a modern-day approach that includes deer resistant plants, appropriate paving for snow removal, and is ADA accessible.

Passaic County Freeholders Award Contract for
John W. Rea House Rehabilitation Project
|
The Passaic County Freeholder unanimously passed a resolution
authorizing an award of contract to Grove Contracting, LLC for the restoration and rehabilitation of the John W. Rea House located in Goffle Brook Park. The Rea House was built in 1810 and is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. The project includes the restoration of historic features throughout the building and the adaptive reuse of the site for art galleries, working studios, office space, and a visitor center. The newly branded Goffle Arts Center at the John W. Rea House will showcase local artists and provide a learning environment for the community. Additionally, new restroom facilities accessible from outside the building will be open during regular hours at Goffle Brook Park, as well as a visitor’s center for information on events and programs happening in Passaic County.

Passaic County CASA Collecting
School Supplies for Children in Foster Care

Passaic County CASA recruits, trains, and supervises Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers who speak up for the best interests of children in the foster care system. The volunteers act as the eyes and ears of the family court, and make recommendations to the judge about children’s needs.
CASA is collecting school supplies to distribute to the nearly 600 children in Passaic County who enter the foster care system each year. Suggested donations include backpacks, composition and spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, writing utensils, folders, calculators, etc. All items must be new.
All school supply donations may be dropped off at the Passaic County CASA for Children office, located at 415 Hamburg Turnpike, Suite B1, in Wayne. Donations will be accepted through Friday, August 24. For more information contact Pam Saunders at 973-832-4002 or pam@passaiccountycasa.org.

The Passaic County Health Department will hold a free eye screening for residents on July 26th from 10 am to 1:30 pm at Center City Mall, located at 301 Main Street in Paterson. Appointments must be made. Reserve your spot by calling 973-881-4396.

Free Zika Prevention Kits
|
|
Zika is a viral infection that is usually spread through the bite of an infected Aedes Mosquito, but can also be sexually transmitted. If a pregnant woman were to contract the virus, it can cause severe birth defects. The Passaic County Health Department is handing out free Zika Prevention Kits to Passaic County residents. Kits can be obtained at the following public outreach events.

July 25th - Hawthorne Town Hall, 445 Lafayette Ave from 5 pm - 7 pm.
July 26th - Clifton City Hall, 900 Clifton Ave from 11 am - 1 pm.

Enjoy a free night at the Dey Mansion on July 19th with live music and a showing of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." Live music starts at 7 pm, and the movie feature begins at 8:30 pm. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring their own tables and chairs.

On July 28th, Friends of Passaic County Parks will host a movie showing of the original Ghostbusters at Goffle Brook Park in Hawthorne, located at 788 Lafayette Ave. The movie will start around 8pm when it becomes dark enough. Guest are encouraged to bring their own tables and chairs.

Swingman and the Misfit Mutts will perform a live concert at the Rifle Camp Park Amphitheater on July 25th from 7pm to 9pm. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets.
