Hunterdon's Tax Freeze Budget
Public Hearing May 18
Hunterdon County’s third consecutive tax rate freeze budget is scheduled for a public hearing by the Board of County Commissioners on May 18, 5:30 pm, at the Historic Courthouse in Flemington. A conference call in option will be available in order to provide social distancing in the courtroom.
Hunterdon Commissioner Matt Holt, a member of the Board’s Budget Committee said, in introducing the budget at the Board’s April 20th meeting, “The $92 million budget shows the county is spending less than it did in the past. The 2021 budget not only freezes the tax rate for the third consecutive year at 31.5 cents, the same rate as in 2018, it also remains substantially below the nearly $100 million budget from 2007.”

Hunterdon, State, and PADEP Join Together To Reduce Black Fly Nuisance
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) conducted the first black fly suppression via helicopter spraying on both sides of the Delaware River on April 21st, Hunterdon County Commissioner John E. Lanza reported at the Board’s May 4 meeting.
Lanza stated, “I can report that the Pennsylvania DEP conducted the first black fly suppression spraying for 2021 on both sides of the Delaware in Hunterdon County on April 21st. We appreciate that New Jersey is again sharing the cost with Pennsylvania in support of the spraying operation that is conducted by helicopter over the river.
Black flies are a nuisance not only to residents seeking to enjoy their decks and patios or other outdoor activities, they also have a negative effect on outdoor tourism enterprises, which are so very important to Hunterdon County’s economy, and have become even more important during the pandemic.”

Historic Courthouse Will Light Up Green Throughout May
The Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse on Main Street in Flemington will display green lights, the color associated with Mental Health Awareness, throughout the month, as the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners recognize May as Mental Health Awareness month and the County continues to be a Stigma Free Zone.
The County Commissioners approved a Proclamation at the May 4th Board meeting stating their support for mental health and the county’s Department of Human Services’ dedication to providing mental health services and support.
Commissioner Shaun C. Van Doren, liaison to the Human Services Department, said, “Mental health is just as important as physical health and navigating the behavioral health system can be difficult, especially when in crisis. The county’s Human Services Department provides coordination, advocacy and links to treatment options, community and inpatient mental health services, residential program information and educational opportunities.”
