County Trash Proposal Public Hearing Deferred to October

At my recent Town Hall, I shared my concern that there are still significant outstanding questions in the community regarding the potential conversion to countywide, government-run trash service. Residents and private haulers raised many concerns that the County needs to follow up on before any public hearing including the legality of breaking many longstanding HOA covenants to accommodate a county-run trash service. Following the town hall, I am happy to report that the Board of Supervisors recognized these concerns and decided at our June 10th meeting to defer the public hearing on the proposal for a county-run trash service from June 24th until October 14th to allow more time to answer community concerns.

Thank you to all of you who participated in the Town Hall. If you missed it, you can watch the full town hall recording here.

In my last newsletter, I shared with you the details on my two sets of concerns about a county-run trash service. First, the impacts of the decision to start the five-year waiting period as well as going to countywide districts – reduced competition, elimination of choices, the potential for reduced services after approval, impact on HOAs, etc. The second set of concerns, and more impactful, is what the change would allow the Board to do to residents – mandatory recycling and composting, establishment of enforcement mechanisms (“trash police”) and a new Zero Waste Fee (“trash tax”). You can read more details on these concerns in my last newsletter.

Prior to October 14th, I encourage you to share your feedback and questions with the entire Board by emailing ClerktotheBOS@fairfaxcounty.gov. You also have the opportunity to sign up to testify at the October 14th public hearing via phone, pre-recorded video, or in person.

As we get closer to the public hearing and receive more information from staff, I will share more updates with you.

Trail Closures for Sewer Rehabilitation Pohick Phase I Project

The initial 3-month closure of the cross-county trail for the extent of the project area started on March 17, 2025. This closure is for a short section of the trail at the north end of the project west of Lake Pleasant Drive. Once the work at this northern end of the project area is complete, the Cross-county trail will be reopened utilizing a detour along Pohick Road. This detour will be in effect for a 12–15-month duration while the remaining rehabilitation is completed on this segment of the project. Trail closure and projects signs have been posted in the Pohick Stream Valley Park;see the map below for reference. For alternate park locations and trails to explore during this temporary closure, residents are encouraged to use the Park Authority’s Park Amenity Locator and Trail Buddy tools.

As part of this work, the sanitary sewer flow will need to be by-passed for the rehabilitation to take place under dry pipe conditions. A series of by-pass pumps, and piping will be installed above ground reroute the sewer flow to a discharge manhole located in the vicinity of Wadebrook Terrace. See the photos below for an example of this setup.

Four-Legged Friend

Meet Mavis Mae a vibrant and affectionate girl who came to us as a stray and has quickly won over staff and volunteers with her charming personality. She's bubbly, friendly, and full of tail wags for anyone willing to give her attention. Mavis Mae loves interacting with people-she welcomes petting and handling and will happily nuzzle in for more. She's got a wiggly body, an alert mind, and a heart that's eager to connect.

During her play test, Mavis showed that she's got great play manners. She enjoys chasing balls, mouths toys gently, and is able to disengage calmly when playtime ends-traits that will make her a fun and respectful playmate in a home.

Mavis Mae is still working on her dog-to-dog manners. During a preliminary intro, she was stiff and unsure. We always recommend slow, supervised introductions if there's another dog in the home-our team is happy to help with guidance on this.

Mavis Mae is looking for a loving, patient adopter who will give her the structure, affection, and playtime she craves. If you're ready to bring home a loyal, happy companion with plenty of love to give, Mavis Mae just might be your girl!

Come meet her and see if she's the missing piece to your family!

This pet is eligible for an Adoption Audition! What is an Adoption Audition? It's a 5-day, no-strings-attached, trial adoption period. You can take this pet home to try it out! Interested? Come to the shelter any time during open hours and talk to one of our Customer Care staff!
