Happy Valentine's Day!
If you are bashful....this edition of the LoveNote 2 is not for you! It's February and we are celebrating love and we want to start the celebration with a conversation about physical intimacy....yes,
sex.
God wants husbands to unite with their wives and become one flesh (Genesis 2:24). And, one of the best parts of marriage is the romance and the lovemaking. God created sex in marriage and wants us to enjoy it and not withhold it from one another. In
I Corinthians 7: 3-5, Paul teaches us, "the husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body (I know my feminist friends are fuming), but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then, come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self -control".
Read this scripture a second time and assess whether or not you are or have been out of order. Sex is not optional! Most of us pick and choose which scripture we want to live by.....we hope this is one that you've picked. (Marital) Sex is a celebration of love. It connects us spiritually, emotionally, and physically. And, this Valentine's Day, we want to remind you to celebrate!
We talk to lots of couples who are struggling in this area of their marriage. Some couples have problems in this area due to:
1)
Physical health issues: diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, prostate cancer, vaginal dryness, erectile dysfunction, etc.
2)
Emotional issues: resentment, bitterness, anger, financial stress, overwhelmed with work and home responsibilities, addiction to pornography and masturbation, depression, anxiety, past sexual abuse, etc.
3)
Time management issues: working long hours; involved in too many groups or activities
4)
Cultural beliefs: sex is dirty...you should be embarrassed and ashamed; you are too old to enjoy sex after fifty
5)
Lack of Communication- which is tied to all the other reasons.... failure to develop a friendship and level of emotional intimacy that facilitates being vulnerable enough to communicate openly, freely and without shame or embarrassment about the issues cited above and working together to address the issues.
Some solutions to these problems are: change in diet, exercise plan, change in medication, visit with physician to discuss issues and try a medication, couples counseling, pastoral counseling, KY Jelly (lubricant), forgiveness, individual therapy and/or accountability partner (friend) to help break an addiction or deal with issues like past sexual abuse, consult a financial advisor, lifestyle changes that may include scaling down to relieve stress, and PRAYER.
Do whatever it takes to keep the fire burning and keep the celebration going.
We wish you love.... spiritual, emotional, and physical!
