New COVID-19 Restrictions for Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Valley Health Regions

With squash being classified as a sport with sustained contact, the November 7th Public Health Order significantly impacts squash in BC.

  • For the three (3) health regions not affected by this Order (Interior Health Authority, Northern Health Authority, and Vancouver Island Health Authority), squash can continue in Level 5 as outlined in the Matrix of Sample Phased-in Squash Activities with Corresponding Risk Mitigations.
  • For Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Valley (minus exception areas), squash has moved down to Level 2. We have updated this resource to reflect the new restrictions, please refer to this revised matrix when planning your squash activity.

Northern BC Squash Community Coaching Conference
On November 6-8, 2020, Squash BC hosted a Community Coaching Conference in Prince Rupert. The weekend saw 6 individuals from Prince Rupert and Terrace come together for a weekend of learning and developing as coaches.

The weekend, facilitated by Ben Uliana and Michael Thompson, featured a pilot of Squash Canada's new Community Squash Instructor Course.

Participant Lee Beal said "With Prince Rupert being a small remote community we don’t often see high calibre players or coaches. Having two high end Squash BC representatives share their wealth of knowledge will leave a lasting impact on those of us that were able to attend the coaching conference. Having a toolbox filled with drills and teaching techniques will make it so we can "effectively" guide new players so that they learn the game properly."

A huge thank you to Prince Rupert Racquet Centre for your hospitality throughout the weekend, facilitators Ben and Michael, and all the course participants for your energy and enthusiasm throughout!

This event was funded in part by a grant from viaSport BC and the Province of British Columbia through the Northern BC Coaching and Officiating Development Fund. We are grateful for their support.
How to Avoid Injury - Squash Physio Tips with Jamie Sonego

A proper warm up before getting on court is so important! A dynamic warm-up can help to improve your athletic performance and also prevent injury. The purpose of a dynamic warm up is to increase blood flow to the areas which will be working and to wake up the nervous system. It should mimic movements that you will use consistently throughout the course of your upcoming activity.

In the video, Jamie Sonego, a squash player and physiotherapist in Vancouver, demonstrates some examples of different dynamic movements to help warm up the hips, the thoracic spine (upper back), and shoulders prior to getting on court! They will help get you warmed up so you can get into those deep lunges! If you have any questions for Jamie feel free to contact her at jamie@baselinewellness.ca
