Reformation Sunday

UCC Higher Education Sunday

On October 31, 1516, Martin Luther tacked 95 complaints against the conduct of the Church on the door of the Wittenberg cathedral, thus beginning the Protestant Reformation. We will be celebrating on this Sunday before!

Children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. There will be trick-or-treating in the sanctuary, during the Postlude - a very special performance. Candy for distribution will be provided.

This Sunday is also UCC Higher Education Sunday. Did you know that the forerunner denominations of the UCC founded many institutions of higher learning across our country? Thirty of them are still in existence today. Others merged to form our contemporary list. Use this link to learn more.

Scripture: Psalm 84; Luke 18:9-14

Performances by the Canterbury Bells

Message of the Day: "The Meaning of Reformation"

Liturgist: Phil Shoulberg

Pastoral Relations Committee

Worship Preview
November 2

Remembrance Sunday

Worship for Sunday, November 2, will lift up the memory of those of our membership who have died in the past twelve months. We will also share communion and light candles for our loved ones who have gone before us.

Please note that November 2 marks the return of Standard Time. Turn your clocks back an hour, the night before.

Thank you!

Thanks to all of you who contributed so generously to the fund underwriting the extensive dental care our friend Ertra needs!

If additional need arises, we will let you know.

Gratefully,

Marilyn and Dan Claggett, Laura Cooper, Annie Sampath, Pat Doyle-Grace, and Joan Musbach

The theme of this year's commitment invitation is, "Dreaming God's Dream: No Gift Too Small, No Dream Too Big."

Pledge forms are available now, from the Narthex table and online by clicking here. Read Mark Edwards' Stewardship Moment from October 19, or watch him at our YouTube channel.

Holiday Open House, November 9

On Sunday November 9th, the Old Webster Trade Association will be hosting its annual Holiday Open House. This includes a visit from Santa, trolley rides, music and lots of activities from various vendors. We have participated in this event for the past few years, but if we would like to do so this year, someone will need to step up to organize it, as previous leadership will be hosting an event for the church at another location. In the past, we have hosted the train and a booth with children’s crafts, hot chocolate and water. Thank you!

If you are interested in participating, contact Christian Education.

"Jesus Has Left the Building" Projects
 November 16

The Peace and Justice Team is busy, busy setting up Jesus Has Left the Building projects. November 16 is the first day we will be working together to bring the gospel to those in our community. Two projects have been lined up, so far.

Project 1. Assembling Care Bags which can be given to folks on the street. This project is a suitable activity for adults and kids both. Contribution of Care Bags contents are needed:

  • socks
  • hand warmers
  • plastic ponchos, to use as shelters
  • soap
  • toothpaste
  • toothbrushes
  • hats
  • gloves
  • first aide kits
  • chapstick
  • skin lotion
  • 1 dollar coins (I put 5, 1 dollar coins in each bag for bus fare, food, etc.)
  • feminine hygiene products
  • granola bars

Bring your contributions and place in a bin in the Narthex. Here’s to doing the work!

Project 2. Worshipping with St. John the Beloved UCC

Experience worship with a largely African American UCC congregation. Members and friends will be carpooling to attend worship at St. John the Beloved Community on Grand, in St. Louis at 11:00am. Please sign up (clipboard in office, or with Jan Barnes on Sundays through November 2) and indicate if you are willing to drive some of your friends from FCCWG.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our host at St. John offers the warning that the building is NOT accessible to all. There are no elevators or chairlifts, and stairs up to the sanctuary and down to restrooms.

Updated CROP Walk Total

Due to several recent gifts, the updated amount our church raised for the CROP Walk is $1,280. Thank you! Thanks, too, to everyone who participated in the Dewey’s Pizza fundraiser for the CROP Walk on October 21.

Habitat for Humanity Work Day

October 11 was Habitat Work Day for First Church. Nine of us joined a group from the WSP Engineering firm to work on a new construction home at 3409 Vista Ave. Tasks included lifting (and receiving) large wall sections, plywood sheets and insulation from the ground up to the second floor, nailing sections together and raising two complete walls! Other work included caulking and nailing floor joists. It was a beautiful day and it was gratifying that so many First Church members participated. Huge thanks to Doug Barton, The Byrne family (Amy, Patrick, Francis & her friend Gus), Pat Doyle-Grace, Neil Hoffsten and Andrea Welnick. Click on the link to see additional pictures and a video!
