1st Sunday of Advent / Advent Event
The Earth Cries Out for Justice
Tracy Keenan Preaching

Dear Covenant friends and family,

It’s hard to talk about justice. Mention one issue and dozens more scramble into the picture. “Yes, but what about…?” we say. It’s as though we are afraid that if we address one specific issue, we will somehow sweep all the other issues off the table. No one wants their fears to get brushed aside.

Mary’s Magnificat, that splendid song of justice sung by Jesus’ mother in Luke 1:46-55 mentions the hungry being fed, but also the rich being sent away without any supper. It mentions the lowly being lifted up, but also the powerful being toppled from their seats of power.

Does that mean that it’s a thorough flip of all circumstances? Or is this song designed to reach a certain place in our imagination where it plants the seed of compassion?

I’ve preached on this text many times, but this season it is speaking to me in a way that surprises me. (I love when the Holy Spirit does that!) Come to church this Sunday and see if you find some surprises, too.

Advent Event begins at 9:30 and ends at 11:00. Gathering will return next week.
