NO April Fools joke could top the past year we have had. Instead SPRING is officially here! The daffodils are blooming at the Garden Triangle and the tulips are also starting to open up! Vaccinations are happening for lots of us, and we are beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel as we approach the Passover and Easter season.
Just like Spring, One. has tons of new beginnings and offerings in April and we are SO excited to introduce you to some new folks that have joined our team this month.
As you read our newsletter either for the first time or a happy return to it month after month, our continued hope is that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy creating it for you to learn about the latest in health news and what is happening in our community. Important Elevator Outage information for our Building
Our landlord has executed a contract to modify and improve the single elevator to our second floor of our building.
As a result, our elevator will be inoperable for the month of March and into April, dramatically impacting the ability for some of you to access our clinic.
Start Date – March 22, 2021
Duration of Work – 2-4 Weeks
Major Impacts –
Elevator Outage – Inoperable for the duration of the project. Will not be operational again until approval from the State of Maryland inspector.
Recent updates...
· Week 2 (3/29/21-4/2/21) Expectations – The majority, if not all, of this work will be contained to the 1st and 2nd floor elevator lobbies.
o Eastern Elevator – New entrance doors, 1st and 2nd floor, for the hoistway/shaft will be installed, as well as new hallway fixture boxes (i.e. call buttons for elevator).
o Summit Solutions – New wiring for the call buttons and completion of the new wiring in the hoistway/shaft.
Once again, we are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this causes you, and we are happy to help you find alternate care for the duration of this project if needed. Thank you for your patience and understanding as these long overdo improvements are made. We will continue to update you as soon as we are informed the elevator is up and running again.

What to Expect When you Enter One. Now
If you have not been to our office lately, there are some changes that One. has implemented for the next time you enter our office. Prior to arrival at the office, you will be sent a liability waver and/or a sign in sheet for services. Once completed, you will wait for the all clear for entry as our front door remains locked. Upon entering, masks are required, you will be asked to dispose of gloves at the door, wash or sanitize your hands upon entry, and your oxygen and temperature will be checked prior to admittance to the clinic. (ladies, please leave the middle finger of your dominant hand without nail polish so we can read your oxygen) Clients will check in and out at the front desk one at a time to avoid cross-contamination. Time will be taken in between clients to deep clean surfaces.
Upon check out, we will have you insert your credit card, no signature will be required, and receipts will be emailed to you to avoid contact.
We continue to encourage clients to utilize telehealth and virtual training sessions as much as possible until we can allow our at risk clients who have been vaccinated to return to the clinic again safely.
While we can still allow clients to enter for one on one fitness sessions, masks are required for the duration of your time exercising in the clinic. Small In person group classes are currently allowed, please check the schedule for in person offerings and email us if you are interested in attending. We are also beginning outdoor classes again.
Remember, as an extra layer of protection, we have implemented state of the art Premier UV light filtration in our air handlers to keep all the air you breathe in our space, virus free, and to prevent the spread of virus from one area to another.

Chi Gong Returns to Quiet Waters Park on April 29th at 10 am with Jeff Masenheimer!
Qi Gong exercise incorporates deep breathing and slow fluid movements for stretching and strengthening the muscles to achieve a meditative state of mind. The exercises found in Qi Gong involve gentle, rhythmic movements that mirror movements found in nature. Qi Gong teaches us to move our bodies in a similar fluid motion, minimizing the risk of injury while maintaining balance and focus.

One jab is doing the job
The global leaders in Covid-19 vaccination rates are Israel and the United Arab Emirates. After them come a handful of countries that have each given between 30 and 45 shots for every 100 residents, including the United States, Britain, Bahrain, Chile and Serbia.

But these handful of countries have followed two different strategies. The U.S. and most others have tried to make sure that anybody who gets a first vaccine shot gets the second shot within a few weeks (except in the case of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one shot). Britain has instead maximized the number of people who receive one “jab,” as the British call it — and has delayed the second jab, often for about three months.
Kate Bingham, a venture capitalist who led the committee that advised the British government on vaccination, has described the strategy this way: “I think it’s the right public health response, which is to show that you try and vaccinate as many people as possible, as soon as possible. Better to protect everybody a bit rather than to vaccinate fewer people to give them an extra 10 percent protection.”
So far, the data suggest that Britain’s approach is working — because even a single shot provides strong protection against the virus.
A delay seems OK
As Dr. Robert Wachter of the University of California, San Francisco, has written, “According to most vaccine experts, delaying shot #2 by a few months is unlikely to materially diminish the ultimate effectiveness of two shots.”
In Britain, the daily number of new Covid cases has fallen by more than 90 percent since peaking in early January. The decline is larger than in virtually any other country. (In the U.S., new cases have fallen 79 percent since January.) Given that the contagious B.1.1.7 variant was first discovered in Britain and is now the country’s dominant virus form, “Britain’s free-fall in cases is all the more impressive,” Wachter told me. “Clearly their vaccination strategy has been highly effective.”

Britain’s approach not only brings immediate benefits, in terms of lives saved; it also reduces the chances of future outbreaks: The fewer people who have Covid, the fewer who can infect somebody else. That’s especially important when more contagious variants are circulating. Worldwide, the number of confirmed new cases has risen 21 percent over the past month.

New Israeli drug cured 29 of 30 moderate/serious COVID cases in days — hospital
Medicine developed at Ichilov moderates immune response, helps prevent deadly cytokine storm, researchers say; 29 of 30 phase 1 trial patients left hospital within 3-5 days

A new coronavirus treatment being developed at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Medical Center has successfully completed phase 1 trials and appears to have helped numerous moderate-to-serious cases of COVID-19 quickly recover from the disease, the hospital said Friday.
Hailing a “huge breakthrough,” the hospital said Prof. Nadir Arber’s EXO-CD24 substance had been administered to 30 patients whose conditions were moderate or worse, and all 30 recovered — 29 of them within three to five days.
The medicine fights the cytokine storm — a potentially lethal immune overreaction to the coronavirus infection that is believed to be responsible for much of the deaths associated with the disease.
It uses exosomes — tiny carrier sacs that shuttle materials between cells — to deliver a protein called CD24 to the lungs, which Arber has spent decades researching.
“This protein is located on the surface of cells and has a well known and important role in regulating the immune system,” said researcher Shiran Shapira of Arber’s lab.
The protein helps calm down the immune system and curb the storm.

To better understand how local businesses do this, we asked our readers to tell us about a small business they love. More than 500 people wrote in to share how small businesses and their employees have offered them kindness in hard moments, brought them joy and reinforced a sense of community even during periods of isolation. We provide seniors and low-income communities with devices, instructions, and free tech-support to connect them to their physicians via TeleHealth, friends and family using digital connectivity, and wellness tools via apps.
Why is this important?
In the short term, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced millions of Americans to stay home. Even a simple trip to the grocery store or doctor’s office puts patients at risk. However, many elderly patients suffer from chronic conditions and need continuous care. In fact, research shows more than 50% of older Americans have 3 or more chronic conditions. To stay connected to their physicians, elderly people need devices to video-chat. Telemedicine, or TeleHealth, involves both an audio component and a visual component. By providing patients devices, we help keep them home instead of risking infection and death by going to the doctor’s office.
In the long term, TeleHealth use has been proven to:
Increase compliance
Reduce patient costs
Decrease hospitalizations
Provide more personalized care
Additionally, digital connectivity has been proven to:

Since the start of the Covid-19 crisis, Light House Bistro staff have stepped in to support the entirety of The Light House food insecure operations—feeding residents, community clients, and managing pantry distribution, which also allowed us to continue to provide training opportunities despite the restaurant closure.
As The Light House begins to transition back to normal operations, we are excited to announce that Light House Bistro will be reopening our doors and plan on welcoming customers back in spring!

For the last 15 years, Heritage Baptist Church in Annapolis has raised funds for the local homeless shelter through soup.
Not just any soup, but recipes from local restaurants that customers dream about, all shared for a good cause on Super Bowl Sunday.
But this year, the coronavirus pandemic makes sharing soup with a bunch of strangers less than smart. So what did the organizers of the annual SOUPer Bowl do?
“We can’t gather and serve soup to raise money for the Light House Shelter, but we’ve decided to continue the effort virtually,” event spokesperson Lea Hurt wrote in an email. “Can’t break a 15-year streak, right?”

Baked Potato Soup
Chef Zachary Pope
Ingredients:
4lbs of Russet Idaho Potatoes (about seven medium-sized potatoes)
3oz Vegetable Oil
1oz Kosher salt
1C. Heavy cream
4C. Whole milk
1 Yellow onion (minced finely)
1T. Garlic, fresh chopped
1t. Cracked black pepper
Loaded baked potato garnishes
Clean the potatoes thoroughly in a clean sink. Leave them in the sink and dowse with vegetable oil. Use salt to place a coating on the potatoes.
Place the oiled and salted potatoes on a cookie pan. Then place the pan in a 300-degree oven for one hour until potatoes are fully cooked, but not dried out. Remove and allow them to cool.
In a medium to a large stockpot, add all other ingredients together except for the Black Pepper, and heat on medium.
When potatoes are cool enough handle, begin to cut each potato into large, three-quarter-inch dice. Be sure to use all the potato skin with all its salty goodness.
Place your diced potatoes, salty skin & all, in the pot with your aromatic milk mixture.
Simmer for one hour, vigorously stirring frequently with a wooden spoon. The mixture in your pot should thicken as you stir and break-up the starchy potatoes.
Taste and season as needed.
Add your black pepper at the end as you please.
Serve with garnishes appropriate for topping any ‘Loaded Baked Potato’ such as sour cream, butter, cheeses, bacon, scallions, chives, hot sauce, grilled chicken, ham.
