The CalChamber's Position on June Ballot Measures

Proposition 28 - Support

Summary: Reduces total amount of time a person may serve in the state legislature from 14 years to 12 years. Allows 12 years' service in one house. Applies only to legislators first elected after measure is passed.

Reason: Unlike the previous proposition in 2008 (Proposition 93), this revised version will only apply to legislators elected after the proposition passes.

For more information, visit www.cafreshstart.com

Proposition 29 - Oppose

Summary: Imposes additional $1 per pack tax on cigarettes and an equivalent tax increase on other tobacco products. Revenues fund research for cancer.

Reason: Does not require funds made from the tax to be spent in California or even the United States. The CalChamber Board of Directors feel it is not appropriate to create new programs when current essential ones, such as education and courts, are being slashed.
