Cards for Claire

Claire Hubley is a long-time congregant and served as the organist at HCC many years ago. She has been a faithful letter and card writer to many in our congregation, and now it is our turn as we show our love and support to her.

Claire has entered hospice as her health declines. She would be delighted to hear from any and all.

Send a note or card to:

Claire Hubley, 23 Cottage Lane, East Hampstead, NH 03826.

And please hold Claire and her family in your prayers.

Each year we support the wider United Church of Christ in a variety of ways. We offer financial support to our NH Conference and Rockingham Association through Our Church's Wider Mission, and we collect financial donations for four special offerings from the UCC that support churches, retired pastors in financial need, disaster relief and much more.

Thank you for all the support you offer not just our own community,

but the nation and world!

A Word from Peace & Justice

Remember the Fistula Foundation? This is a nonprofit group that operates hospitals specializing in surgeries to repair childbirth injuries such as fistula. The women who suffer these injuries are shunned by society and their families in many parts of the world. (An episode in season 9 of “Call the Midwife” featured an immigrant woman from southeast asia that was suffering from fistula and was too ashamed to seek help.)

The foundation sends out a quarterly newsletter, “Transformations”, to update donors of their progress and the December one shared great news for the Fistula Foundation! This past year they received the largest donation from an individual ever. It was from MacKenzie Scott and resulted in a plan to provide 80,000 surgeries that otherwise would not have been performed. The plan also called for launching the Fistula Foundation Treatment Network (FFTN) in Tanzania. Growth has become the word of the year and has become the “mantra” that will drive the foundation’s work into the future. In addition to the 80,000 surgeries and the new FFTN, the growth goals include adding more than 40 surgery and outreach partners to their global network, and creating five new treatment networks in countries with the highest unmet need.

Of course they are asking for financial support to help achieve these goals. See the newsletter linked below for details on how to donate. But also read about the stories of three women whom the foundation helped, two doctors that perform the life-changing surgeries, and information about the planned new networks.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

9th-Century Latin hymn

This hymn, originally in Latin, takes us back over 1,200 years to monastic life in the 8th- or 9th-century. Seven days before Christmas Eve monasteries would sing the “O antiphons” in anticipation of Christmas Eve when the eighth antiphon, “O Virgo virginum” (“O Virgin of virgins”) would be sung before and after Mary’s canticle, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46b-55).

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel – full lyrics

O come, O come, Emmanuel,

And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here,

Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free

Thine own from Satan's tyranny;

From depths of hell Thy people save,

And give them victory o'er the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Dayspring, from on high,

And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,

And death's dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come

And open wide our heav'nly home;

Make safe the way that leads on high,

And close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Adonai, Lord of might,

Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,

In ancient times didst give the law

In cloud and majesty and awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Blankets for Project Linus

For those of you who have been busy sewing, quilting, knitting, or crocheting, we have an new opportunity to donate those handmade items!

We located a national organization that has local chapters called Project Linus (https://www.facebook.com/projectlinussouthwestnewhampshire/). This organization's mission is "to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans". Blankets are given to children in need through NH.

*We welcome all styles of blankets made in child-friendly colors/prints.
*Crocheted, knitted, quilted (100% cotton or flannel), fleece….you don’t have to be an expert!
*Blankets must be NEW, HANDMADE and WASHABLE.
*Fabric blankets can be quilted by machine, hand or tied. If you are tying the blanket make sure the ends are trimmed to 1” and the knots are secure.
*Please do not add any embellishments to the blankets such as buttons that could be swallowed by a child.
*If you are using a no-sew fleece pattern, please be sure to trim off both selvages FIRST. Not sure what selvages are? Ask the clerk who is cutting your fleece to please show you, they’re those odd looking edges at the top and bottom of the piece you have, sort of raggy looking.
*We accept all sizes of blankets. We donate to children, infants through teen years, so any size is appropriate. Baby blankets are typically 36”X36” or 36”X42”, toddler-pre-teen are typically about 40”X60”, and teen blankets are at least 60"X72".

Blankets can be dropped off in the entry way of Hadley Hall.

Thank you for your support of this project!
