Construction Update

For the first two months, the Bast Hatfield construction team has been hard at work removing layers of old plaster, paint, and concrete in the theater and offices above. This messy yet necessary task is revealing the space’s “original bones" and architectural flourishes. But some of those original 1926 elements will get a special makeover before being reinstalled as part of the final interior design.

Hanging in the theater for nearly 100 years, and glowing with red bulbs for the past several decades, these Spanish Renaissance-style lanterns above were carefully removed early on in the process and are now headed out for restoration.

In this follow up to Madagascar, New York Central Park Zoo animals Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, and Gloria the Hippo start off where we last left them, on Madagascar. When they finally leave the island in attempt to return to New York, they land instead in the wilderness of Africa. Here, an overjoyed Alex reconnects with his parents and the rest of his family. But communicating with them, after spending so much time at the zoo with his fellow animal transplants and visiting New Yorkers, is another story.

"This is one of those rare occasions where the sequel is better than the original." Derek Adams, Time Out

The Crandell Theatre is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit community cinema in Chatham, NY. It is one of a few community-based, nonprofit theaters in the United States devoted to film and one of fewer than one hundred single-screen movie theaters nationally. The theater is supported by ticket sales and earned revenue, contributions of members and friends, and private and public grants, including the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Since 2010, Crandell Theatre, Inc., has raised more than $1 million to purchase the historic theater and make needed repairs. The current Crandell board is engaged in a multi-million-dollar campaign to renovate and restore the area’s oldest, largest, single-screen theater and enhance the moviegoing experience for generations to come.
