Planting the future

Across Wisconsin schools, the simple act of planting trees is taking root with powerful results. Schools recognize that their outdoor spaces are more than just playgrounds and athletic fields. School grounds can become living outdoor classrooms that create opportunities to broaden educational frameworks and deepen student engagement. And planting trees can add even more usefulness to a school grounds, especially in urban settings.

While the environmental benefits of trees are well known, their impact in school settings reaches far beyond shade and beauty. Urban forestry in school settings offers a powerful combination of environmental, educational and social benefits. Trees improve air quality, reduce urban heat, manage stormwater and provide habitat for wildlife. When these benefits are brought directly onto school grounds they become tangible learning tools. Students can observe seasonal changes, study biodiversity and engage in hands-on science that connects directly to their everyday environment. A tree is no longer just something to read about or walk by — it becomes something to care for, measure, and learn from over time. 


Teachers can incorporate urban forestry into subjects ranging from science and math to art and language arts. Measuring tree growth, calculating carbon sequestration, sketching seasonal changes , or writing reflective essays are just a few ways trees can enhance curriculum.


Professional development opportunities for educators can further strengthen this integration, providing them with the tools and confidence to use outdoor spaces effectively.


When students are directly involved in planting and caring for trees, they begin to see themselves as part of the natural world. These hands-on experiences create a sense of ownership that cannot be replicated through textbooks alone. Students begin to understand that their actions have real outcomes, and that they play a role in shaping their environment.


Planning a successful school tree planting project starts with thoughtful site evaluation. Factors such as soil type, drainage, available space, and proximity to buildings or utilities all influence tree selection and placement. Choosing the right tree for the right place is essential, not only for the health of the tree but also for minimizing long-term maintenance issues. Native and urban-resilient species are often the best choice, as they are adapted to local conditions and support regional ecosystems.


But stewardship does not end on planting day. In many ways, that is just the beginning. Trees require ongoing care, especially in their early years. Establishing a maintenance plan like watering, mulching, and monitoring tree health become regular tasks that can be integrated into classroom routines or student-led initiatives.


Successful schoolyard tree-planting projects often rely on collaboration. Teachers, students, administrators, families, and community partners all play important roles. Local arborists, forestry professionals, and conservation organizations can provide guidance on tree selection and care, while volunteers can assist with planting and maintenance. These partnerships not only strengthen the project but also build a shared sense of purpose and pride in the school environment.

Updated Urban Forest Lesson Guide!

Over the past two years, LEAF Resource Specialist Gina Smith has collaborated with Wisconsin DNR Urban Forest Outreach Specialist Jenn Janness and other members of the DNR Urban Forestry Team to update LEAF's Wisconsin K-12 Urban Forest Lesson Guide.


The guide continues to offer educators ready-to-use lessons to help students explore the urban forest in their communities and understand how it are cared for and sustained. It remains organized into three grade level bands, K-4, 5-8, and 9-12, with lessons that explore the following questions:

•  What is an urban forest?

•  Why are they important?

•  How do we sustain them?

•  What is the future of Wisconsin’s urban forests?

Where to find the updated Guide

Teachers can access the updated guide from our website or directly in Google Drive. All files can be downloaded for free for classroom use. Most files meet Title II Standards for Digital Accessibility.


Printed guides will be available at select LEAF professional development trainings during the 2026-2027 school year and as part of an Urban Forestry Kit that will be available for check out starting in the fall.

Update highlights

LEAF's updated Urban guide includes new opportunities for outdoor learning at each grade level. For example, in K-4 Lesson 2: Why are Urban Forests Important, students use their senses to make observations in the urban forest during mindfulness and micro-observation activities before they use infrared thermometers to locate local heat and cool islands on their school grounds.


The updated guide also adds stronger urban forest climate connections with activities related to urban heat and increased rainfall events added at the K-4 and 5-8 levels. For example, in 5-8 Lesson 1: Urban Forest Connections, middle school students answer questions about the urban water cycle and planning while examining maps of Wisconsin that show the increasing frequency of significant rainfall events.


The guide now provides opportunities for students to practice English Language Arts (ELA) standards at all grade levels. Math skills can be practiced in activities like Measurement in the Urban Forest from K-4 Lesson 3 or the Urban Forest Cost and Benefit Analysis activity from 9-12 Lesson 1.


The updated Urban guide features 11 career biographies of people working to keep Wisconsin’s urban forests healthy. The biographies cover a wide range of roles including arborist, assistant city forester, city planning director, regional utility forester, school district groundskeeper, urban forestry coordinator, and carpenters who work with urban wood. In the biographies, professionals share what they do in their jobs, what type of education or training their job requires and what they like best about their job.

FREE FOR TEACHERS! FHAW Fall Conference

‘King’s Pines to King’s Dam: Stories of American Forests” is the theme of this year’s Forest History Association of Wisconsin (FHAW) Fall Conference, being held September 25th-26th at UW-Stevens Point's Treehaven in Tomahawk.

Starting with the role pines played in founding our country to the way private lands help supply Wisconsin’s forest industry, the meeting will be a celebration of America’s 250th birthday and a commemoration of the 50th year of the FHAW.


FHAW is generously offering free teacher participation in both the Friday tours and the Saturday presentations, including all meals. (Those unable to attend Friday can still take advantage of the free Saturday registration.) A limited number of free teacher registrations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring Natural Resources to life this summer!

It’s not too late to connect your students with real-world career pathways in natural resources! The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at UW–Stevens Point offers engaging virtual and in-person classroom visits designed for middle and high school students. Our presentations highlight hands-on STEM majors that take students beyond the classroom and into the field — where they explore careers in wildlife, forestry, water resources, and more!


Looking for something more hands-on? We also welcome field trip groups year-round to campus, where students can take part in interactive labs and activities led by CNR faculty and staff.
