Dear T-Bird Parents & Families,
Our students are surviving midterms and we hope they enjoyed a well-deserved fall break. As we approach registration for spring semester and as midterm grades come back, it is normal for students to wonder if they are on the right track. This is part of the great adventure of being a college student. It's a perfect time to improve on current study habits and to learn to use campus support resources to help create success.
Some tips and resources for study-savvy students:
-
Tutoring Center- free drop in tutoring, study groups, and one-on-one tutoring. Students can also work with a tutor to improve study skills, test-taking strategies, and time-management.
-
Writing Center- free writing help for students of any major. Their website also includes writing tips and online appointment scheduling.
-
Speech and Presentation Center- assists students in writing and presentation of speeches.
-
Tutoring Center Online Resources- includes videos, worksheets, and links to help students improve study skills, test taking strategies, and study strategies.
-
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)- short term, goal oriented counseling for students. The Let's Talk series also offers free, drop in (virtually) consultations around campus.
-
Student Support Services- developmental classes, skills courses, and academic and tutoring support for students who are first generation, first-time, low income, ESL, non-traditional, or have physical or learning disabilities.
-
Disability Support Center- support and services for students with disabilities who are overcoming different educational difficulties because of their individual challenges.
-
Gerald R. Sherratt Library- quiet study areas, print papers, get research help, reserve a study room, use a computer, make copies, check out calculators, I-pads, and books.
-
Reach out to their Student Success Advisor for support, guidance in creating an academic plan, and preparing for graduation.
-
Schedule a Career Assessment with the Career Center to explore strengths and career pathways. A great resource for students changing majors or looking for a new direction.
-
Professor office hours- posted days and times professors are available in office to meet with students and answer questions. Office hours are listed on the course syllabus in Canvas. Students should come prepared with specific questions or concerns related to the class.
-
Form a study group with peers from the class.
-
Schedule a meeting with their ACE (peer mentor). Stop by the Nest, Student Center room 148, visit the Nest website, or call 435-865-8752 with any questions.
Some questions you could ask your student:
- "Are you attending class regularly?"
- '"How are you managing your time?"
- "What is the hardest thing about your classes?"
- "How are you studying for your classes?"
- "Have you visited the tutoring center?"
- "Do you set aside time for each class during the day to get your work done?"
- "Have you been to your Professor's office hours?"
We appreciate all the support our students receive from home. Here is a great article that looks at some of the ways students may struggle academically and how parents can help. As questions arise throughout the semester, please don't hesitate to reach out. We also understand that in many instances you may be the first to recognize that your student is struggling emotionally, physically, academically, etc. We have created a way for you to report a student concern to SUU so we can help your student find success: https://www.suu.edu/parents/student-concern.html. There is so much support available on campus, let's help your student use it. We look forward to continuing to work together to create a great experience for your student at SUU.

Students are encouraged to meet with their professors during the professor's office hours. This is scheduled time set aside for our professors to meet with students. It's a great time to get one-on-one help, constructive feedback, and help with specific questions. Each professor's office hours will be posted in the course syllabus on Canvas.

Spring Semester registration is coming quickly, these signs are all over campus. Does your student know which day they register? Do they know which classes they plan to take? Has your Freshman met with their Student Success Advisor to have their hold removed? Students can schedule appointments with their advisors online here.
If your student is feeling overwhelmed, or not sure where to start, please have them reach out to their ACE. The ACES offices are in the Nest, the student help center on campus, in the Student Center room 178.
