Winter pruning done in January or February is the best investment you can make to keep your existing shrubs and trees attractive and healthy. Reshape your large plants, remove plants that are no longer happy, and thin out or transplant aggressive perennials. Do this in the winter, and when spring comes you'll be ready to add new plantings, or just relax and enjoy what you have. Even plants such as azaleas and hydrangeas that are normally pruned in the summer after they bloom, can be shaped in the winter by selectively removing a third of the branches and leaving the rest unpruned. This year is particularly important because last year we avoided winter pruning to let the plants recover from the damaging '22 December freeze. The next best time to prune is summer; typically for plants that are done blooming after the spring. Worst times to prune are fall and spring because the plants are in transition from hot to cold, and cold to hot.
