Winter pruning done in January or February is the best investment you can make to keep your existing shrubs and trees attractive and healthy. Reshape your large plants, remove plants that are no longer happy, and thin out or transplant aggressive perennials. Do this in the winter, and when spring comes you'll be ready to add new plantings, or just relax and enjoy what you have. Even plants such as azaleas and hydrangeas that are normally pruned in the summer after they bloom, can be shaped in the winter by selectively removing a third of the branches and leaving the rest unpruned. This year is particularly important because last year we avoided winter pruning to let the plants recover from the damaging '22 December freeze. The next best time to prune is summer; typically for plants that are done blooming after the spring. Worst times to prune are fall and spring because the plants are in transition from hot to cold, and cold to hot.

A Quest for Beauty: Creating gardens for the spirit
To learn more about designing sacred gardens, I enrolled in an online class: The Way of Beauty. We studied medieval, baroque, and renaissance church architecture and paintings. I was able to travel to Princeton for the SCALA conference on sacred art. I may have been the only landscape person, but I enjoyed meeting other artists creating traditional Christian art.
Check out my blog to view our church garden projects, and get ideas for your own sacred garden, which can be done on your own property. Church Gardens
Here are a series of sketches for our church entrance I made, while working with the landscape committee. These enabled us to explore different ideas before arriving at the final design, which was presented to the vestry.
