GROUP HOPES TO CREATE GREENWAY TRAILS IN TIFTON
|
The
Tiftarea Greenway Association (TAGA)
is hoping to create
two greenways
in
Tifton
for
walking
and
biking
.
TAGA
is raising
funds
to pay for an
engineering plan
to create the
two trails
. To date,
$800
has been raised primarily through its
Go Fund Me
online page. The organization has a
$20,000
goal to pay for the detailed engineering plan.
The
proposed trails
are one that runs along the
old CSX railbed
from the
Tiftarea YMCA
on
Carpenter Road
to the
Interstate 75 bridge
near the
Chick-fil-A
restaurant, and one that starts at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
and
ends downtown
at the
Tifton Terminal Railway Museum
.
"Imagine having
safer, beautiful trails
for
walking
and
biking
in our community. Trails are known to provide numerous
health, economic and environmental
benefits that enhance communities,"
TAGA
says in a written statement. "The groundwork for this vision begins with having a
detailed plan
and
support
from a
cross-section
of the
community
."
The proposed
Carpenter Road Greenway Trail
is already
well shaded
, TAGA says, and will provide opportunities to
bicycle or walk
to the
various restaurants
along the route on the
north side
of
U.S. Highway 82 West
.
The
Moore Highway Trail
is proposed to run along the existing
railroad green-space
and provide a
safe travel route
to
several schools
–
ABAC
, the
UGA Tifton
Campus
,
Len Lastinger Elementary
and
Eighth Street Middle
– and to recreational areas such as
Brodie Field
and the
Tift County Recreation Department
. The
downtown
section of the trail would
provide access
to
Veterans Memorial Park
and
businesses
along
Main Street
.
