This 4-hour workshop will focus on the complexities of gender identity development for transgender individuals, as well as effective models of psychotherapeutic care for this population. We will begin by exploring the distinct spectra of sex, gender identity, and gender expression. Workshop participants will gain understanding and clarity around the diversity of gender presentation and identity, as well as gender identity development across the lifespan. Transgender community concerns will be discussed as it relates to presenting concerns in psychotherapy. We will end the workshop by exploring the role of the cisgender ally clinician.

 provided by Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP), is approved for continuing education by the New Jersey Social Work Continuing Education Approval Collaborative. CE Approval Collaborative Approval Period: May 1, 2017 through August 31, 2018. Social Workers will receive 4 continuing education hours (three 3 social and cultural comptency and one(1) clinical) for participating in this course.

About the Presenter:
Benjamin Davis, MA, ATR-BC, LCAT is an educator
who has been training mental healthcare 
professionals about LGBT cultural competency issues since 2006. He has presented in
hospital, academic, and agency settings internationally. Benjamin has collaborated with The Center's Gender Identity Project, the New York Department of Health, CUNY School of Public Health, the National LGBT Task Force, and the Ackerman institute for the Family's Gender and Family Project. He has served on the board of directors for the National LGBTQ Cancer Network, the advisory board for the Lesbian Cancer Initiative, and the Callen Lorde Community Health Center's Health Outreach to Teens Community Advisory Board. 
Benjamin has worked as an art therapist with youth, adolescent, adult and geriatric clients in a broad range of clinical settings, including medical and psychiatric inpatient programs, outpatient treatment centers, residential treatment facilities and psychosocial clubhouses. In individual and group therapies Benjamin partners with clients to create space to regain agency and empower healing. He is in private practice in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York.
