Information about our Weekend Ideation Program in Micro Budget Motion Picture Directing coaches and speakers will be published in our Winter 2021 edition. Fellows in that program have been selected and are hard at work building their team. Our Playwrights Immersive coaches and speakers will be published in our Spring 2021 edition of this newsletter. Fellows for this program will be selected in March 2021.

Weekend Ideation Program - Acting

Our first Weekend Ideation Program in Acting will take place on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15, 2020.

Kimee Balmilero
Director, Acting Program
Hawaii born actor Kimee Balmilero is best known for her regular role as Medical Examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha on CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I.”

Other professional credits include: the Original Broadway Cast of “Mamma Mia,” and the 2nd National Touring Company of “Miss Saigon.” While working in New York and Los Angeles, she studied improv & sketch comedy at the Uprights Citizens Brigade Theatre and performs with the on-going show Filipino AF whenever she is back in Los Angeles. 

Since returning back home to Hawai'i in 2012, Kimee has launched several creative ventures including Improv Hawaii, The Hawaii Comedy Festival and Stage Fish - a theatre production company. 

In March 2020, Kimee opened a performance space in Honolulu called The Tiny Stage, a place for creatives to showcase original work with little overhead. The space currently hosts several live virtual shows a week.

Deedee Magno Hall
Deedee Magno Hall - Voice of Pearl on Cartoon Network’s Peabody, GLAAD & Emmy Award winning animated series, “Steven Universe.”

Joy Regullano
Joy Regullano is a writer / actor / comedian based in LA and is currently writing for a Dreamworks / Netflix animated show.

She was a "Sesame Street" writing fellow and recently was a staff writer on the Netflix show, "The Healing Powers of Dude."

TV acting credits include "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," "Modern Family," "Speechless," "House of Lies," and "Supernatural."

She has performed improv and sketch around LA at UCB and Second City Hollywood.

Her YouTube sketch "White Fetish," went viral with 1M+ views and has been featured in the Huffington Post, Upworthy, and more.

Steve Blum
Steve Blum is a voice actor, teacher, and CEO of BlumVox Studios.

With literally hundreds of V/O credits to his name, Veteran Voice Monkey, Steve is best known as the voice of "Spike Spiegel" from Cowboy Bebop, “Wolverine” from several incarnations of X-Men (animated movies, games, the Wolverine and the X-Men TV Series, The Super Hero Squad Show, X-Men Anime and more), “Orochimaru,” “Zabuza,” and others from Naruto, “Green Goblin” from the Spectacular Spiderman series, “Heatblast,” “Vilgax” and “Ghostfreak” from Ben 10, “Grayson Hunt” (Bulletstorm) “Grunt” (Mass Effect 2 and 3),"Zoltan Kulle" from Diablo 3, "Abathur" from Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, “Tank Dempsey” (Call of Duty), “Killer Croc” from Arkham Asylum, “Oghren” (DragonAge),“Vincent Valentine” (Final Fantasy VII), “Leeron” (Guren Lagann), “Jamie” from Megas XLR, Storm Troopers and many others in most of the Star Wars games.

Moronai Kanekoa
A native of Maui, Moronai Kanekoa was most recently seen as the lead in the feature film "Maui" (also known as "Kuleana,") directed by Brian Kohne.

Having received an MFA in Acting at the University of Southern California, Moronai remained in Los Angeles and has been fortunate enough to work on shows such as "Bosch," "Hawaii 5-0," "Castle," and "Scorpion."

He also toured Hawai'i in a one-man play called "The Legend of Ko’olau." 

Being a lover of all kinds of television and film, Moronai feels blessed to be part of an industry that has helped shape his life and is eager for what is to come.

Mericia Palma Elmore
Born and raised in Texas, Mericia has been lucky to call Hawai'i home since 2001.

A one-time actress/producer, occasional professor, and attorney, Mericia found a home with SAG-AFTRA as the Hawaii Local’s Executive Director. 

In addition to serving on the Pacific Islanders in Communications Board, she is also the Chair of the Hawaii Film and Entertainment Board, and an adjunct professor in the University of Hawai'i system.

She lives on Oahu’s beautiful windward side with her 3 kids, 3 dogs, 4 chickens and a husband.

Jason Suapaia, Director
Indigenous Storytellers
Born and raised on Oahu, and recently marking his 26th year in Hawaii’s creative industries (production, marketing, and design), with a focus on content creation, Jason is currently a creative consultant for individuals, companies, departments, and organizations.

His experience as a seasoned executive spans over 16 years which includes managing staff, creative professionals, and various media projects at companies such as 1013 Integrated, PBS Hawaii, and Ocean Blue Hawaii.

He has been executive producer and creative team lead on various integrated campaigns, local and national commercial productions, corporate branding, and graphic design projects for a wide range of clientele. He has managed various production studio operations, coordinated technical and creative teams, and produced event productions of all sizes. 

Jason is a talented, published illustrator and has experience teaching graphic design history and advertising classes at Honolulu Community College. Also Jason Co-Founded `Ohina The Short Film Showcase in 1999, served as Board President for the Film and Video Association of Hawaii from 2009 to 2016 and co-hosted a TV show on OC16 for four years called Hawaii’s Reel Stories.
Lucas Brown Eyes
Lucas Brown Eyes is a Native American comedian and TV writer from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

He has been staffed on over 100 episodes of television with Netflix, Fox, Freeform, Disney, and PBS. He’s from the Oglala Sioux tribe and always believed he was going to make TV one day. In fact, his Indian name is “Wawo Yaca Wicasa” which means the “story teller” in Lakota. So, destiny may be working a little on his side. I don’t know, I’m just a bio paragraph. 

He became an award-winning filmmaker at Orange County High School of the Arts attended USC where he earned a B.A. in Cinema-Television Production. In 2014 he was accepted into the ABC Disney Writing Program.

Since then he has worked on Netflix's "Alexa & Katie,", Freeform's "Young & Hungry," Disney's "KC Undercover,", PBS' "Future Proof," and Fox's "Reservations."

He currently has the First Native American Family comedy in development at 20th Century Fox. 
Kelly Lynne D'Angelo
Hailing originally from her Haudenosaunee homelands in Upstate New York, Kelly Lynne D’Angelo has done her fair share of storytelling in different mediums, including writing for television, musicals, film, books, and animation.

Recent credits include “Miracle Workers,” Adult Swim's “Final Space,” Cartoon Network’s “Mao Mao,” and Hasbro’s “My Little Pony: Equestria Girls.”

You can catch her on various online platforms from Twitch to Youtube as a professional Dungeon Master for Dungeons & Dragons, Geek & Sundry, College Humor, Buzzfeed, and more.

Nāʻālehu Anthony
Nāʻālehu Anthony is a Native Hawaiian from Kaʻaʻawa, O’ahu and is the founder of Palikū Documentary Films and co-founder of ʻOiwi Television Network.

Nāʻālehu has a vast array of experience in the film industry and has been immersed in the Hawaiian community throughout his life. His desire to give voice to Hawaiʻi’s stories as told by Hawaiians from our perspective is the very reason Nāʻālehu pursued a career in film and television.

Nāʻālehu’s other great passion is being a part of the voyaging community. As a crew member since 1996 and more recently as a captain aboard Hōkūleʻa. His voyaging experiences have shaped and defined him as a person and has been a focal point for his films. He was in charge of on-board communications for the team that documented the Worldwide Voyage and sailed multiple legs of the journey.
Dr. Kū Kahakalau
Dr. Kū Kahakalau is an award-winning native Hawaiian educator, songwriter, researcher, cultural practitioner, grassroots activist, and expert in Hawaiian language and culture.  

For the past 35 years, Kū has promoted hands-on learning in the environment, community sustainability and Hawaiian self-determination through her Pedagogy of Aloha (love, care, compassion).

She also founded and administered multiple, innovative Hawaiian-focused educational programs, a 
flourishing social enterprise called
Kū-A-Kanaka, and EA Ecoversity, a Hawaiian-focused higher education and career training program.

Theater Program
Michael Jackowitz served as the Musical Theater Liaison for the Harold Prince Musical Theater Program at The Directors Company in NY (1993) and is the Founding Partner of WitzEnd Productions, formed in 2013 for the creation of New Work. He is a graduate of the Commercial Theater Institute’s Producing Seminar (1996) in New York and continues to serve as Rubicon Theatre’s Director of New Work in California.

Chisa Hutchinson
Chisa Hutchinson (B.A. Vassar; M.F.A NYU) has presented plays at such venues as the Lark Theater, Atlantic Theater Company, the National Black Theatre, Second Stage Theater and Arch 468 in London.

Her first radio play, "Proof of Love," can be found on Audible. Chisa has been a member of New Dramatists, a Dramatists Guild Fellow, a Lark Fellow, a NeoFuturist, and a staff writer for the Blue Man Group.

She’s won a GLAAD Award, a Lilly Award, a Helen Merrill Award, and the Lanford Wilson Award.

She is currently premiering her film, "The Subject" (starring Jason Biggs and Aujanue Ellis) at various festivals, finishing a script for Disney, and writing for a new Showtime series. www.chisahutchinson.com .
Marsha Norman
Marsha Norman won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for her play, ‘night, Mother, and a Tony award for the book to her musical, "The Secret Garden," as well as another for the Revival of "The Color Purple." She has been co-chair, first with Chris Durang, and now with David Lindsay-Abaire, of the Playwriting Program at The Juilliard School for twenty four
years. She also teaches musical book at Yale.

Her most recent Broadway work is
"The Bridges of Madison County," and the revival of "The Color Purple." Her new project is the book for a musical about two women who dressed as men and fought in the Civil War, and a new play, assisted by the UN, about trafficking and violence toward women worldwide.

She has won a Peabody award for her work in television as well as grants and awards from among others, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation,
and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. She has won the Margo Jones Award, the Sidney Kingsley Award, the William Inge Lifetime Achievement Award
in Playwriting, and the Dramatists Guild Career Achievement Award. And in 2016, she was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

She writes and lectures frequently on playwriting and the musical book, and holds 18 honorary degrees from American colleges and Universities.

She is a founder and President of The Lilly Awards Foundation, on the Dramatists Guild Steering Committee, as well as serving on the Education Committee.

Jade King Carroll
Jade King Carroll is a director based in New York City.  Carroll is known for her work on new plays and African-American classics.

She has directed five world premieres by Chisa Hutchinson and is currently working with Dael Orlandersmith on their third collaboration this year. Carroll has spent years developing work with many prominent playwrights. She has directed at several leading theatres across the country including Hartford, McCarter, New York Theatre Workshop, Long Wharf, Two River, Atlantic and Lincoln Center Institute.

As an Associate Director she has worked on Broadway and at Carnegie Hall. Past Fellowships & Awards: Paul Green Award, New York Theatre Workshop, Van Lier, Second Stage Theatre, Women’s Project, McCarter Theatre, SUNY 40 under 40, TCG New Generations Future Leader and Gates Millennium Scholar. 
Emmanuel Wilson
Emmanuel Wilson is the managing director for the Dramatist Guild.

In the role, Wilson oversees the staff, operations and systems of the organization comprised of playwrights, composers and lyricists.

He comes to the position after growing the guild’s membership to more than 8,500 from 6,500 in his three years with the organization.

At the Dramatists Guild, Wilson developed new partnerships with Blackboard Plays, the Educational Theatre Association and the Theatre Communications Group. He serves on the Guild’s New Media, Membership, Political Engagement and DEI committees.

Wilson is also the founder of Blue Rose Stage Company and formerly the artistic associate and literary manager at TADA! Youth Theater.

Donna Blanchard
Donna Blanchard is the Managing Director of Kumu Kahua Theatre, President of the Hawaii State Theatre Council, Executive Team Member of the `Ohina Showcase, Labs and Films, and a Community Advisory Board Member of Hawai`i Public Radio

She received her BFA from the Professional Actors’ Training Program of Wright State University, followed by training at Chicago’s Second City Training Center; her body of work includes acting, directing, teaching, and business direction specializing in rescue and growth.  

She is also a freelance writer and author and illustrator of the book, “Sometimes Adults Are Stupid: but you shouldn’t use that word.”

Gordon Bellamy
Gordon teaches at USC Games, serves as head of the USC Bridge incubator and USC esports faculty advisor. He has played key business and product leadership roles at Tencent, Electronic Arts, as a designer on Madden NFL Football, and MTV.

In 2020, he received the Games for Change Vanguard Award for his contributions to the industry and is featured in Netflix's documentary, “High Score,” about the history of video games.  

Gordon serves as the president / CEO of the Gay Gaming Professionals 501 (c) 3 and on the Board of Directors of leading virtual entertainment company, Wave and has served as Executive Director of both the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the International Game Developers Association. He received the first ever Jerry Lawson Lifetime Achievement Award from Blacks in Gaming in 2017.

He is a graduate of Harvard College with a BA in Engineering, and resides with his husband Joe Heally. 
Dina Benadon
Dina Benadon is a passionate believer in people, technology and the future - the culmination of a career rooted in producing groundbreaking immersive entertainment. As Co-Founder and Principal of Super 78, an international award-winning creative studio, Dina inspires and cultivates the company’s expertise in experiential storytelling. Established in 1997 as a media design and production studio, Super 78 is a leader in content, attraction creation, and an innovator of storytelling technology tools that include the award-winning, real-time animation system "Geppetto" and Virtual Reality cutting-edge production tool "MushroomVR."

In 2017 Dina Co-Chaired SATE; a visionary conference celebrating Story, Architecture, Technology, and Entertainment for the Themed Entertainment Association.

An award-winning producer and advocate for talent, Dina served as Vice Chair of the Producers Guild of America and as Board Delegate for seven years earning the Mark A. Levey Service Award. Dina also served the TEA for three years as a Board Delegate and as Vice President in 2005.

Dina is a graduate of USC, School of Arts and Sciences.
Tony Valenzuela
Tony E. Valenzuela is an award-winning director, producer and creator of BlackBoxTV, a VR channel on YouTube with over one million subscribers. Tony has produced and directed immersive VR content for Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, IFC, Fox Studios and Oculus. In 2017, BlackBoxTV debuted “Find Me,” a scripted virtual reality series, mobile app and game produced in partnership with Collab Creators and The Los Angeles Times

In 2017 & 2019, Tony worked closely with Warner Bros. on two stand-alone VR experiences for their adaptation of Stephen King's, “It.” The resulting two VR experiences garnered a combined 45+ Million views for BlackBoxTV. In the fall of 2019, BlackBoxTV began distributing their VR content on the HTC Vive, adding this partner to its other outlets: Oculus & YouTube.

In 2020, Tony began working on a concept called "VR For US,” with the goal of bringing hi-quality, low-cost VR glasses and experiences to the masses. The company formed around this effort officially launches in 2021. Tony is currently traveling the western United States filming the BLM protests that sprung up after the death of George Floyd. Segments of Tony’s footage have been used by NBC, ABC and Oculus’s "VR For Good."

Tony is a winner of five Streamy Awards including back to back wins in 2017 & 2018 for Best Immersive Series. 
Jay Williams
Emmy Award winning Producer Jay Williams has been a Senior Media Executive and Global Creative leader for nearly three decades with experience spanning Disney Theme Parks, The Disney Studios, Digital Media, Film and Television Production. He is Executive Producer and Head of Growth at Super 78.

Jay spent much of his career in Marketing and Branding, as well as production. He has a proven track record having helped launch numerous Disney Theme Parks, Attractions, Resorts, The Disney Cruise Line and well over 300 films during his 17-year career with the Walt Disney Company. Post Disney, Jay launched an award-winning multi-platform studio and consulted for a number of studios, networks, production companies and agencies. 

Jay has won numerous industry awards including the first prime-time Emmy for Virtual Reality and was nominated for a second Emmy in 2018 for "The Walking Dead" Digital Series; “Red Machete” for AMC.

Jay teaches Writing for Immersive Media and VR part-time at the school of Film and Television for Loyola Marymount University and prior to that he taught for five years at AFI as part of the producing track. 

Jay is currently an active member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and a board member for the New Media Council for the Producers Guild of America.

Jimmy Cheng
Jimmy Cheng is Director of Content at Digital Domain focusing on the acquisition and licensing of XR content.

He represents over 150 studios (Atlas V / Secret Location / etc.) and engages with 10 global telecoms to find suitable licensing opportunities.

Prior to being in charge of content licensing, Jimmy was hired by Digital Domain Holdings Limited as Director of Business Operations, mainly focused on daily operation, and was deployed to Beijing, Shanghai, and Taiwan to support the integration of various subsidiaries into the corporate fold.  
HFC - Creative Lab Hawai'i - Feeder Program Update

HFC Screenwriters Lab participants spent the last three months applying lessons on story design, dialogue, career advancement, and other writing fundamentals. Now everyone is hard at work finishing a first draft by the end of the lab. 

After 10 intensive sessions covering the fundamentals of producing, the participants of the HFC Producers Lab are in production of their films which will be screened on November 13th as the conclusion of the HFC 2020 - Creative Lab Hawai'i - Feeder Programs.
Amy Bircher
Amy Bircher's Creative Lab Hawai'i Writers Immersive project originally titled, “Victorian Christmas,” and now renamed “Christmas Comes Home,” recently completed production., and sold to Lifetime. This project marks Amy's third project for the network.

Amy is currently writing another Christmas script, “Holiday in Hawai'i,” and plans market the project soon. 

This project marks the fourth project to be produced out of the Creative Lab Hawai'i Writers Immersive program (three motion pictures, and this project is our first television movie.)
Mary Baghdady, Alexander Deedy, Zoe Eisenberg
set to produce "Ala Moana Boys."

The historical drama short “Ala Moana Boys,” following the experience of five young men wrongly accused of a heinous crime in 1930s Hawai'i, is currently set to go into production in March 2021. The project is written by Alexander Deedy (Writers Immersive, 2018), produced by Mary Baghdady (Web Series Immersive, 2019) and Zoe Eisenberg (Producing Immersive, 2019), and directed by Keli’i Grace.

Connie Flores
Hawaii's own Connie M. Florez, a Creative Lab Hawai'i graduate fellow, (Weekend Ideation Programs- Financing, Indigenous Storytellers) produced, line produced, production managed, location managed and 1st AD on the indie feature film titled "Waikiki" and is the closing night special presentation for the 40th Annual Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF). 

This is the first Native Hawaiian feature film from Hawai'i by Director/Writer Christopher Kahunahana. 

Connie shared, "It took an entire village of filmmakers and community to give birth to this riveting story of life in Hawai'i with love and compassion."
Chris Gibbon wins spot in Humanitas
New Voices Program

Chris Gibbon, a graduate fellow of the 2019 Writers Immersive, was recently selected as one of five winners of this year’s Humanitas New Voices Screenwriting Contest with his original feature “Breakwater,” the screenplay he workshopped in the Writers Immersive. In addition to a cash prize, Chris is receiving mentoring on a new screenplay from Vanessa Taylor, Oscar-nominated writer of “The Shape of Water.” In early 2021, Humanitas will submit Chris’s work to one of its studio partners, with the aim of generating further interest.

The short, about a woman longing to connect with a stranger who does not know she exists, will screen at this year's HIFF.
Mitch Viernes' projects premiere at HIFF

Mitch Viernes, a graduate fellow from our Web-Series Immersive has two projects premiering at HIFF. They are:
While surfing helps Chanel mend the emotional wounds of her parent’s death, she still struggles to connect with her drug-addicted brother, Caleb. When Caleb is injured in a hit-and-run accident, Chanel vows to help her brother heal his physical injuries and his drug problem. But while mending their relationship, another problem arises that challenges Caleb’s already broken spirit. “Water Like Fire” is a tale about the courage to walk through fire until you find peace.
A man wakes up to find an ominous stranger in his dining room and is faced with making an impossible decision.
G.B. Hajim sets "Backyard Battleship" as his next project

GB Hajim, a graduate of our 2018 Producers Immersive, is planning to write/direct/produce his latest motion picture titled “Backyard Battleship” When a devastating accident threatens his son’s life, a father needs to learn to let go and trust that his almost adult son knows what he’s doing, even if he son is trying to go to space in a ship of his own design.
