Birdhouse

Supplies:
  • 1 paper towel roll
  • Paint brush
  • Craft paint (any color)
  • Cardstock (various colors and patterns)
  • Toothpick
  • 8” long ribbon or string
  • Glue
  • Scissors
Binoculars

Supplies:
  • 2 toilet paper rolls
  • Card stock or wrapping paper
  • 1 large bead
  • Ribbon or string
  • Hole punch
  • Stickers
  • Glue or tape
  • Scissors
Instructions:

To Make the Birdhouse:
1. Cut 2” inches off each side of one end of the paper towel roll to create a point at the top. From the other end of the roll, poke a hole (big enough to get a pair of scissors in) about 2” up from the bottom. Put the tip of your scissors in the hole and start cutting the roll to create a small rectangle opening for your birdhouse door. Make sure your door is centered in the point at the other end of the roll.
Paint paper towel roll in whatever color you choose. Let paint dry.
2. Cut a 3’x 6’ rectangle for your roof from plain colored cardstock. Fold it in half to make a peaked roof. Poke a small hole in the middle of the fold. Thread and knot the 8” long ribbon through the hole to create a hanger for the birdhouse.
3. Cut small squares using all your different papers. Glue squares to your roof, starting at the top of each peak and working across in rows making sure squares are neatly next to each other. Continue each row on both sides of the roof until the paper roof is covered with squares.
4. Glue roof to the cut point side of the paper towel roll. Cut a circle just a little larger than the circle of the roll and glue to the bottom of your house. Poke the toothpick in the roll under your bird door for his perch!
5. Hang on your favorite tree!

To Make the Binoculars:
1. Cut a piece of cardstock or wrapping paper so that it will wrap completely around one of the toilet paper rolls. Glue or tape paper in place and then repeat this process with the other roll.
2. Glue the bead in the middle of both rolls to secure the two toilet paper rolls together.
3. Use stickers or crayons to decorate the binoculars.

**Optional: have an adult use the hole punch to poke a hole on either side of the finished binoculars (make the holes down towards one end). Thread and knot the ribbon through the holes to create a "strap" for the binoculars. This step should only be taken for older children. Please do not use this step if this craft is intended to be played with by a younger child
