Phlox vs Phlox!
A very good question! Let's discuss.
Creeping phlox, or phlox subulata, is a low growing creeper (under 8 inches tall) that is mat forming on top of the ground. They generally bloom March through April for up to two weeks depending on the particular variety. Creeping phlox will often hold its foliage as evergreen in moderate to warmer climates.
We also have the Blue Moon which is a divaricata or commonly called woodland phlox. It is more of a creeping phlox as it is mat forming and only reaches about 12 to 15 inches tall. A shade lover and semi-evergreen.
Garden phlox (paniculata) or tall garden phlox begins growing in later spring reaching 20 to 36 inches tall. Many garden phlox typically begin blooming in early summer and through late summer. Height and bloom time depends on specific varieties. Their longer blooming period and fragrant flowers make them an excellent choice for garden or sitting area locations.
Our newest garden phlox (introducing them below) are from the Garden Girls® Collection. These new stunning perennials are long blooming as they are rebloomers from mid to late summer (early fall). Enjoy in your garden setting or cut for fresh fragrant flowers to enjoy indoors.
If you are new to Tall Garden Phlox, your garden is missing out on this engaging perennial. Plant at least 2 varieties for contrasting flower color along sunny patio and deck sitting areas or border your front walkway to greet arriving guests. You'll be sharing bouquets with everyone!
