FLAG DAY CELEBRATION

Tuesday, June 14

June 14 commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution stating that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.

Join us for a fun program and a delicious treat afterwards. Put on your red, white and blue and exercise your flag waving arm, we can not wait to see you there.

FROM YOUR DIRECTOR

Beth Wentz2022.png

Beth Wentz,

Executive Director

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

How often have we said these inspiring words? I remember those early years in school and beginning my day standing with my class, putting my right hand over my heart, and proudly joining with the teacher and fellow students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Since then I have had many opportunities to repeat those beautiful words at the beginning public events.

The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by Baptist minister Francis Bellamy in 1892 and published in the children’s magazine, The Youth’s Companion, as part of the 400th anniversary celebration of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas.

June has many days to celebrate but one of my favorites is June 14th, Flag Day! When I started my career at Crestwood I wasn't even aware of Flag Day or imagine celebrating it but some of my most favorite events and fondest memories are of our Flag Day event. You will want to be a part of the rich tradition this year to add to your own memories.

COMMUNITY NEWS

ROAD TRIPPIN'

This month we are on the road to South Dakota. South Dakota is the home of the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota tribes, which make up the Sioux Nation. In 1803, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, a real-estate deal that at the time doubled the size of the United States. Sturgis is home of the annual Black Hills Classic Motorcycle Rally. The largest underground gold mine is the Homestake Mine in Lead. The U.S.S. South Dakota was the most decorated battleship during World War II. The first and oldest Dakota newspaper was published in 1861.

LOOKING BACK

May 2022

Cycling Without Age returned in May for the residents of Crestwood North to take a ride on the Monon Trail without any of the work peddling a bicycle! CWA is completely volunteer based and we appreciate the opportunity to have them at CWN twice a month to get residents outside & enjoying the beautiful scenery! See your RSC to sign up for a turn to experience the fun!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Walk for Humanity fundraiser on May 17th. It was a beautiful day to take a walk while raising money for such a worthwhile cause. The hot dogs & brats were the perfect way to refuel and the t-shirts are always in style. It was a great event with lots of fun & laughter had by all.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

Bill Martin

When did you move to Crestwood Village?

I moved to Crestwood Village North Building 1 in November of 2010.

Where did you grow up?

Columbus, OH and Largo, FL

Tell us about your family and/or pet(s)

I have 1 sister and growing up I lived with several family members, so there were always lots of people around.

What's the most interesting or unusual thing about you?

I am a Vietnam Veteran - 1968. I graduated from Ohio State in 1974 using my GI bill from my military service. I majored in Computer Science, worked for companies installing computer systems, and teaching them how to use it. I always wanted to be a teacher, so in a roundabout way I was. President Ford spoke at my college graduation.

If you could tell your younger self something, what would it be?

Be more outgoing and be in charge of your life.

What do you want to be remembered most for?

That I cared about people.

HIT A FITNESS HOME RUN!

As baseball season is underway, there is a great opportunity to exercise while watching your favorite team win the game. No one will accuse you of being a couch potato while you are watching America’s favorite pastime!

  • Each pitch - reach your arms up overhead so your palms touch, stretch out the arms to the sides than back down. Repeat until next pitch.
  • Batter hits the ball- march in place until the next pitch is thrown.
  • Batter hits a home run- reach both hands to your shoulders, tap them, then lift your arms straight overhead, then touch your shoulders again and reach for your toes. Repeat this until the batter reaches home plate.
  • Commercial break- stretch your legs. Tap you heal on the floor, toe up, and repeat with each leg. Do this until the game comes back on.
  • Time out or delay- bring your arms out to the side and make small clockwise circles then counterclockwise.
  • Batter walks- point your toes up to the sky and reach your arm down to touch it. Do this stretch one leg at a time and switch back and forth until the next batter comes up.
