JEAN RENFORTH,

Executive Director

Did you know October used to be the eighth month?

The early Roman calendar, thought to have been introduced by Rome’s first king, Romulus (around 753 BC) was a lunar calendar. This ancient timekeeping system contained these 10 months: Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Iunius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October (meaning the "eighth" month), November, and December. Martius, Maius, Quintilis, and October contained 31 days, while the other months had 30, for a total of 304 days. In winter, the days were not counted for two lunar cycles.

It wasn’t until about 713 BC that a calendar reform, attributed to the second Roman king, Numa Pompilius, added the months Ianuarius and Februarius. Some historians think that both months were placed at the end of the year, while others believe that Ianuarius became the first month and Februarius the last. Later reforms organized the months as they are arranged today in the Gregorian calendar, whereby October became the 10th month in spite of its name.

At Crestwood Village, we pack the calendar full of engaging life enrichment opportunities. I encourage all of our residents to attend the many events here at Crestwood Village this October!

This month we are on the road to Georgia. Georgia is often called the Empire State of the South and is also known as the Peach State and Cracker State. Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River. The annual Masters’ Golf Tournament is played at the Augusta National in Augusta every first week of April. Georgia is the nation’s number one producer of the three Ps – peanuts, pecans, and peaches! The oldest portable steam engine in the United States is on display at Historic Railroad Shops in Savannah. The official state fish is the largemouth bass.

LOOKING BACK

September 2022

Crestwood Village South had a month packed full of fun events. The Mens Club enjoyed music by John Kirby while the Ladies Tea held a fashion style show where they modeled their own clothing. Building 4 sponsored a gospel group.

We ended the month with a Legend’s Night benefitting Habitat for Humanity. Residents enjoyed a wonderful dinner and live music with a tribute to Elvis. With donations and the silent auction, we collected $1,442!

We hope you can join us next month for all the fun we will be having.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

Vicki Wood

When did you move to Crestwood Village?

I moved to Crestwood Village in September 2021.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the east side of Indianapolis. My husband, Bill and I lived in Greenfield, IN before moving to Lake Havasu City, AZ where we lived for 25 years. I moved back to Indianapolis in 2013 after losing Bill.

Tell us about your family and/or pet(s)

I was blessed with a wonderful marriage and I have 3 stepchildren, 4 grandchildren and 2 beautiful great-daughters. I also enjoy a close relationship with my only sibling and his family.

What's the most interesting or unusual thing about you?

I was a VP at Indiana National Bank, then became a consultant. In Arizona, I obtained my real estate license. My proudest accomplishment was definitely walking the Grand Canyon!

If you could tell your younger self something, what would it be?

Spend more time learning from and about your parents!

What do you want to be remembered most for?

Being a good friend.
