FROM YOUR DIRECTOR

JEAN2.jpg

JEAN RENFORTH,

Executive Director

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

How often have we said these inspiring words? I remember those early years in school and beginning my day standing with my class, putting my right hand over my heart, and proudly joining with the teacher and fellow students in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Since then I have had many opportunities to repeat those beautiful words at the beginning public events.

The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by Baptist minister Francis Bellamy in 1892 and published in the children's magazine, The Youth's Companion, as part of the 400th anniversary celebration of Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas.

June has many days to celebrate but one of my favorites is June 14th, Flag Day!

You will want to be apart of the rich tradition this year to add to your own memories.

ROAD TRIPPIN'

This month we re on the road to South Dakota. South Dakota is the home of the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota tribes, which make up the Sioux nation. In 1803, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France, a real-estate deal that at the time doubled the size of the United States. Sturgis is home of the annual Black Hills Classic Motorcycle Rally. The largest underground gold mine is the Homestake Mine in Lead. The U.S.S. South Dakota was the most decorated battleship during world War 11. The first Dakota daily newspaper was the Yankton Daily.

LOOKING BACK

May 2022

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our Charity Walk for Habitat for Humanity on May 24. We had a wonderful day for a walk and raised money for a great cause. It was great seeing everyone in their t-shirts and everyone was fueled with food. The health fair was a great touch. Residents were able to interact with our care partners and ask questions about care. It was a great event with fun and laughter.

HIT A FITNESS HOME RUN!

As baseball season is underway, there is a great opportunity to exercise while watching your favorite team win the game. No one will accuse you of being a couch potato while you are watching America’s favorite pastime!

  • Each pitch - reach your arms up overhead so your palms touch, stretch out the arms to the sides than back down. Repeat until next pitch.
  • Batter hits the ball- march in place until the next pitch is thrown.
  • Batter hits a home run- reach both hands to your shoulders, tap them, then lift your arms straight overhead, then touch your shoulders again and reach for your toes. Repeat this until the batter reaches home plate.
  • Commercial break- stretch your legs. Tap you heal on the floor, toe up, and repeat with each leg. Do this until the game comes back on.
  • Time out or delay- bring your arms out to the side and make small clockwise circles then counterclockwise.
  • Batter walks- point your toes up to the sky and reach your arm down to touch it. Do this stretch one leg at a time and switch back and forth until the next batter comes up.
