Mental Health Awareness Month
|
|
May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Established in 1949, this month is focused on raising awareness on mental health and wellness with an emphasis on reducing stigma and providing resources to those in need.1,2
Mental health illness is prevalent among the American population. In a given year, 7.8% (19.4 million) people experience a major depressive episode, 19.1% (48 million) people experience an anxiety disorder, and 3.6% (9 million) live with post-traumatic stress disorder.3 Furthermore, mental health conditions and co-occurring substance abuse disorder are experienced by about 3.8% of U.S. adults, that’s 9.5 million people.3 In addition, mental health illness is disproportionately experienced by those who are already marginalized including LGBTQ individuals (44%), Asian-American/Pacific Islanders (31%), Native Americans (19%), and Black/African-Americans (17.3%).3,4
If you know or suspect someone is experiencing a mental health condition, show them your support. A supportive person in someone’s life is an invaluable resource to combating mental health illness and keeping up with mental wellness. Educate yourself on the common conditions out there, ask questions and seek out answers, and don’t be afraid to directly and politely ask that person what you can do to help. Please visit https://www.nami.org/home to learn more. Another way of showing support to youth experiencing a mental health crisis in your community includes using the resources available to you.
Friends for Life is a school program of Crime Stoppers of Tarrant County equipped to take anonymous reports on various victimization topics including suicide, self-harm, family violence, dating violence, and more. Submit anonymous tips by calling 817-469-8477, going to www.469tips.com, or using the “CCS FFL” mobile app. Visit https://469tips.com/youth-programs/friends-for-life to learn more about Friends for Life.

|
Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week! The week was all about the amazing teachers who work to educate our community's youth each and every day. During a year that left teachers having to navigate an unprecedented situation, they continued to show why teachers are valuable and essential to our community's day-to-day life.
Crime Stoppers of Tarrant County appreciates our community’s teachers this week and every week!

Started in 1962, this week is focused on remembering and honoring those officers who were lost in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
