Support CrimeStoppers and your city with your charitable donations

Simple. Effective. That’s our story.

CrimeStoppers fights crime around the clock every day of the year. Citizens securely call or text or email us anonymously so that we can identify crooks and give authorities information which helps arrest fugitive felons.

This works because other citizens donate to us generously.

That is Crimestoppers in a nutshell: people who report and other people who support.

Neighborhood bar killing quickly

solved thanks to CrimeStoppers tip

The argument began with words between two men seeing the same woman.

The disagreement escalated as the two men went outside a bar on Cleveland Street near Crump Stadium. Soon one man pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into a parked car, killing Blake Rhea, a well-known local musician.

The gunman fled the scene before police arrived.

But a tister called CrimeStoppers and provided an identity of the suspect as Edward Wurl. Memphis detectives determined the information was accurate. Wurl turned himself in and was charged with first degree murder.

Wurl was found to have been convicted in Fairfax City, Virginia for burglary and wounding, so a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun was added.

Paid to the tipster: $4,000.

Donations of any size are welcome. Checks made out to CrimeStoppers may be sent to our offices at 600 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 451, Memphis, 38105, or visit our website to make a secure donation now.

CrimeStoppers by the numbers

The CrimeStoppers Citizens Awards Committee approved a total of $17,200 in cash awards for cases reviewed early in December from the month before.

The money was committed for 31 cases involving 32 individuals charged and/or arrested. The tips also led to police closing 24 active case files and the recovering of more than $1,000 in stolen property.

Among the cases solved were two murder cases, making 25 homicides solved so far in 2024 by people who called information to CrimeStoppers.

Cold cases site helps detectives

A new website provides information on numerous cold-case homicides.

A Cold Case is an unsolved felony crime awaiting the discovery of new evidence. It is a case that was suspended after the initial investigation for lack of leads but remains an open file.

It is a case that sometimes may require a new set of investigative eyes, and the aid of the public.

It is CrimeStoppers’ strong belief that in every crime someone knows something — it could be a seemingly small detail — that could be enough to lead to a solution — and justice for the victim and the victim’s family.

CrimeStoppers here offers a series of Cold Case files for public consideration. To provide a tip, call or text CrimeStoppers: 528-CASH (2274).
