Golf tournament a big success

raising dollars to pay tipsters

Action News Five anchor Joe Birch conducts an auction at the end of the golf tournament. Joe also captained one of 30 teams.

The seventh annual CrimeStoppers golf tournament — one of two fundraisers we produce each year — took place at Windyke Country Club Monday September 18, 2023 and the day and event both were perfect.

Many thanks to our CrimeStoppers Board Members, volunteers and patrons for what definitely was our best tournament yet.

We especially want to thank our many sponsors, led by our title sponsor Phelps Security again this year.

We also appreciate these companies and individuals:

The Dillard Companies, Sonoco, an Anonymous company, Old Waverly & Mossy Oak Golf, FedEx, Gary and Frances Paulson, Amerigo’s, the Butcher Shop, Crosstown Brewery, Buster’s Liquor and Wine, Cheers Wine and Spirits, Colletta’s, Capital Grill, the Daniel Law Firm, Fountain Financial, Herbi-Systems, Joe’s Liquors, Lexus of Memphis, Legacy Wealth, Cork’s Wine and Spirits, Huey’s, Joe’s Liquors, Patrick McDowell, Radian Partners, Leopold, Moondance, Old Dominick, Julia Panagon, Soul Fish, Splash Creative, Staks, Watkins Uiberall, Windyke Country Club, Matt Hagaa/State Farm, P.F. Changs, Royal Panda, Seasons 52, Smoothie King (Coillierville, Germantown and Olive Branch stores), Shoemaker Financial, Volvo of Memphis, Whitehorn Tankersley & Davis, Wolfchase Toyota, The Pet Hospitals, Jim’s Grill, Jerome Wright, and two anonymous individuals.

The fundraiser raised much-needed dollars to help pay tipsters whose anonymous information leads to warrants or arrests in felony crimes.

Sponsors and teams alert: the next tournament is scheduled for Monday, September 16, 2024 and will be held once again at Windyke.

Award raised to $10,000

in blatant hit-and-run killing

Ava Christopher was driving on Central Avenue in midtown just after midnight Tuesday, July 25, 2023, when a driver in a red Dodge Challenger drove through a red light at Cooper Street and slammed into her Sonic.

Christopher was taken to the hospital where she died. The driver of the Challenger, a male, and his female passenger ran from the scene of the crash, heading south. The car they were in had been reported stolen.

The young woman’s family and friends have increased the award.

Woman missing after birthday

party on the Memphis Queen

While it’s not officially declared a felony crime, a missing person’s report has police asking for help and for people to call information to CrimeStoppers.

Tamia Taylor, 21, went with friends September 9, 2023 to the Memphis Queen. It was her birthday and she chose the late night Memphis Riverboat Booze Cruise for the birthday venue. At press time a body was found in the river along the Arkansas bank, but it has not been identified yet.

Friends told police they were on the top desk when Taylor excused herself to use the restroom. She left her phone on a table. That was the last they say they saw of her.

When the riverboat docked, their friends got off the boat and waited for Taylor to appear. She never did.

Police are asking anyone who saw Taylor that night, including anyone who might have seen her leave the boat, to step forward. All calls to 528-CASH (2274), the CrimeStoppers tips line, are anonymous.

Donations of any size are welcome. Checks made out to CrimeStoppers may be sent to our offices at 600 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 451, Memphis, 38105, or visit our website to make a secure donation now.

Cold cases site helps detectives

A new website provides information on numerous cold-case homicides.

A Cold Case is an unsolved felony crime awaiting the discovery of new evidence. It is a case that was suspended after the initial investigation for lack of leads but remains an open file.

It is a case that sometimes may require a new set of investigative eyes, and the aid of the public.

It is CrimeStoppers’ strong belief that in every crime someone knows something — it could be a seemingly small detail — that could be enough to lead to a solution — and justice for the victim and the victim’s family.

CrimeStoppers here offers a series of Cold Case files for public consideration. To provide a tip call or test CrimeStoppers: 528-CASH (2274).
