Work begins on the Seafood Workers Mural

Through the Handy grant, the  Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore  has awarded the  Crisfield Arts and Entertainment District  Project $5,065 to assist in funding a Seafood Workers mural. This is the final amount needed to fully fund this project and work will begin in artist  Michael Rosato 's studio within a week. This project is led by Darlene Taylor and Eric Banks on the behalf of the  Greater Crisfield Action Coalition, Inc . Both Darlene and Eric worked in the seafood industry in their youth.

Artist Michael Rosato specializes in designing and painting large-scale murals for public and private spaces and is the artist for the well-known Harriet Tubman murals in Cambridge. The Seafood Workers Mural will be located at 347 W Main Street, the former Tighty’s Pool Hall, in the heart of the historic district. The mural will represent both the oyster and crab industries.

The final sketch is the result of several months of community input accepted for this project and the time for input is now completed. The mural will be ten feet high by thirty-two feet long and will have much greater detail than the sketch.
The mural will cost $19,930 and is funded by grants from the  Maryland State Arts Council , the  Somerset County Arts Council  and the  Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development  as well as $2,000 from the Crisfield Arts & Entertainment District (CAED) Project.

Artist Michael Rosato as well as project leads Darlene Taylor and Eric Banks will participate in the Crisfield Arts & Entertainment District planning meeting taking place June 9th at 4 pm. All are welcome to participate in the meeting.

Join the June 9th Arts & Entertainment District Planning Meeting (information above) for an update on Delmarva Birding tours!

Delmarva Birding Weekends  has run bird watching tours on Smith Island for more than 20 years. For the past two summers, they have worked with Barbara Ann Charters and the Smith Island community to launch tours to safely view nearby nesting colonies of Brown Pelicans. The all-day guided tours include private charter aboard the Barbara Ann II, small group skiff tours to view the pelican nesting colonies, and lunch at the world-famous Drum Point Market. The  award-winning tours  are very popular and well-received by guests and partners, and many guests stay in Crisfield before and after their tour. Check out these YouTube videos about the experience from WBOC’s Outdoors Delmarva:  Pelican Tour Part 1  and  Pelican Tour Part 2 .

Although they have not scheduled any tours this summer due to COVID-19 restrictions, tours will start running as soon as possible. Visit  www.DelmarvaBirding.com  to learn more or register for their e-newsletter.
