Critical Incident Stress Debriefing-

A Resource Available for ACC Departments & Teams

ACC Office of Human Resources would like to inform you of a benefit available through the Deer Oaks Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Deer Oaks offers various support services to ACC departments and teams in the event of a critical incident or during a time of crisis. These services may range from providing information and practical support or telephonic crisis support to management consultation and on-site group meetings.

Examples of a critical incident may include but are not limited to:

  • Employee Death
  • Violence
  • Workplace Accidents
  • Terror Attacks
  • Natural Disasters
  • Layoffs/Restructuring

If you feel that your department or team would benefit from a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), communicate with your supervisor.

In order to request a CISD, the Supervisor would then need to complete the CISD request form and reach out to HR Benefits to assist in setting up a session.

What to expect from a CISD:

Once we have received the CISD form, HR Benefits will contact EAP and have an Incident Manager contact the department's supervisor directly. Incident Managers are clinical trauma professionals who will support your team from the initial consultation to establishing the intervention plan through the event and post-event follow-up. The CISDs are conducted in a group setting and are booked in a 2-hour increment, with follow-up sessions available if needed. Debriefing is not counseling but rather a structured voluntary discussion aimed at putting an abnormal event into perspective.

Deer Oaks can have someone available within 24 to 72 hours of the initial call when the faculty/staff members are better prepared to start dealing with the thoughts, emotions, and impact of what happened. The primary goal is to help the individuals involved deal with the emotional effects of a crisis, critical incident, and/or traumatic event. Although a quick response is necessary, the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Response Group needs to have adequate time to respond appropriately.

CISDs can be offered virtually or in person, depending on the team's needs. In-person support will require a signed consent form from every attendee. During the CISD, employees will be reminded of their EAP benefits in case they need ongoing individual support during this difficult time.
