Time for an Email Refresh

Is It Time to Create a New Email Address?

As you search for and apply to colleges and other opportunities, it is important to have a personal email address you keep up with and that appears professional. Is it time to create a new email address?

  • You should have a personal email address with a professional username to communicate with admissions representatives and potential employers. Think: your "krazykid2007" email might not be the address you want to use anymore.

  • Is your current email inbox full? If you created a personal email address in middle school (or even high school), your inbox may be overflowing and not accepting messages - we see you, forgotten icloud accounts.

  • The email address your high school has given you may be blocking messages from non-school addresses, and it will be deactivated when you graduate. Opening a personal email account will ensure you receive important messages now and after you graduate.

Tips for Success When Using Email

Whether or not you decide to open a new email account, reviewing your email habits is a great way to ensure you are successful when using email.

  • Check your email regularly - at least every other day. To avoid a full inbox or missing an important message, be sure to read and respond to emails in a timely manner.

  • Ask yourself the questions above each time you go to send an email. Be sure your language is professional and you clearly state your purpose for sending the email.

  • Practice helps you improve! Communicating with Crosby Scholars is a great time to practice your email skills. Next time you have a question for Crosby Scholars, practice writing an email the way you would email a college admissions representative or potential employer. Each time you practice writing a professional email, you have the opportunity to improve your skills.

Speaking of Emails...

Have You Contacted Potential Recommenders?

During your meetings this spring, your Crosby Advisor encouraged you to identify and ask individuals to write letters of recommendation for your college applications. Have you contacted your potential recommenders yet? Both the Common App and ACT teams suggest contacting potential recommenders before the end of junior year. This allows people time to consider your request and prepare to write your letter. If you can, ask in person. If not, a well-written email is appropriate.

Read more about letters of recommendation, who to ask, and what to provide from the Common App and ACT.
