Welcome to our first
Weekly News of the 2017-18 school year! It is so exciting to begin our time together and to anticipate the many things our school year has in store. To begin, we now have 144 students enrolled who will be working with thirty-nine faculty and staff. This community of 183 people share many commonalities in our purpose and our vision for K-8 education, but we also possess an impressive diversity of thought. And though we are building on twenty-five wonderful years of tradition, there are also so many initiatives that this unique group will begin this year--ideas that stretch far beyond what we can currently imagine.
So here's to all of the possibilities for growth and learning that will be set in motion by this wonderful community. I look forward to a great school year together and to co-creating the magic with each of you that inspires us all.

Greetings from the Admissions Office! We're off to another great school year, and what a joy it is to have the classrooms filled with the happy voices of children once again. I love this time of year with all the energy that comes from new beginnings. My hope is that this will be a delightful school year for every person in the Crossroads community!
It is my pleasure to report that thirty-five new students have joined us at Crossroads this fall--thirteen new kindergartners (fourteen total); four new first graders (eleven total); three new second graders (fifteen total); one new third grader (sixteen total); four new fourth graders (fifteen total); four new fifth graders (seventeen total); four new sixth graders (seventeen total); two new seventh graders (nineteen total), and the eighth grade class is at full capacity with twenty students. The total enrollment for 2017-2018 is 144 students, eleven more than we had at the beginning of last school year and tied for the record for the highest enrollment at the start of a Crossroads school year!
Thanks to all of you for the small and large ways that you helped us to attract so many wonderful new families! And they really are wonderful--please go out of your way to get to know them and warmly welcome them into our Crossroads community.
Have a lovely week! -Warmly, Marilyn

Morning Drop-Off
With the increased number of students this school year, we try to be as efficient as possible at the drop-off line. It would be most helpful if you could have all of child's/children's belongings together and ready to go.Thank you.

A Word of Thanks
This summer was one of the busiest ones in our school's history. Many staff, faculty, and volunteers deserve a great deal of credit and our sincere thanks for all they did to prepare for the coming school year.
Gene Martin, Lyle Nichols, and for a few weeks, Matt McGuigan completed extensive renovations in Klee. They moved the second grade classroom to the second floor, created a faculty lounge, a new conference room, and two new administrative offices, and built a guest waiting area near admissions. Gene and Lyle also replaced the second of two bridges on our Hoopes Loop Trail.
Also in Klee, Marj Martin and Trish Smith moved into their new classroom while Kathy Barth and I also moved offices. Allie Skaperdas, Michele George, and Ryan Chappuis spent many days cleaning out, organizing, and settling into their new classrooms. And Crossroads parent Melinda Hansberry volunteered to design and help create our beautiful new faculty lounge.
Other Crossroads parents, Stephen Branchflower and Phil Harrison, were instrumental in designing and helping the new outdoor classroom become a possibility, building upon the permitting work Steve Gorman completed last spring. While the construction of that project will not begin on site until we have approval from the town's zoning and planning boards, we hope to begin this project soon. We will be sharing more information about the outdoor classroom when it's available.
In the Middle School, Gena Doyle and Bruce Freeberg settled into their new classrooms and office spaces while Steve Glazer made several changes to his room as well. And in Bancroft, Heather Verheeck oversaw a wide range of summer programs including those that were instructed by Matt McGuigan and Evelyn Lechner. Also in Bancroft, Posie Taylor conducted an inventory and spent many mornings reshelving the books in our library with the help of Laurel Mackin.
All this activity took place while Marie Wesson, Marion Frazer, Marilyn Wanner, Darlene Gautreau, Nancy Mosson, and I were busy wrapping up the previous school year and completing many preparations for 2017-18. Amy Kreuzburg and Marion Bates were also on campus frequently, finalizing schedules and preparing for a new year of IT needs.
Summer is a precious time for faculty and staff to relax and renew for the next year. My colleagues deserve our gratitude for going above and beyond what is usually asked during June, July, and August. Please join me in thanking them for all they did to help our school grow and be in great shape for another successful year.
Yours truly, Brad

Grandparents Day (10/6)
Grandparents Day will soon be here on Friday, October 6! At this event grandparents/special friends are welcomed at Crossroads to spend time in classrooms, hear students presenting poems and songs, have a photo taken with their grandchildren, and enjoy refreshments. Our hope is that every child will have a grandparent/grandfriend, parent, or older sibling here to share the day with him or her.
Invitations will be mailed this week to all grandparents we have on record. If you want to make sure we have your family's grandparents' contact information, please e-mail Marion Frazer. As well, if a grandparent you anticipate attending Grandparents Day has special needs we should be aware of, please let Marion know.
We look forward to warmly welcoming grandparents to Crossroads on October 6!

Spirit Gear
Sale (9/5 - 9/19)
Good news--we have a new Spirit Gear vendor who offers not only the traditional items everyone loves, but also a tremendous variety of outerwear and accessories. So if you need t-shirts or sweatshirts, of course they're available. But if you were hoping for hats, scarves, jackets, bags...even stadium blankets...those are now available as well. During the Spirit Gear sale (9/5-9/19), you can order anything from the sale flyer at 10% off the regular price, and it will be shipped to the school free of charge and then sent home with your child. If you don't see what you are looking for on the sale flyer (or just want to browse all the cool new stuff), the full array of offerings is available through the
online store
during the sale period and throughout the year. Items not on the flyer will incur a shipping fee and will be drop-shipped to your home. The Crossroads Academy Parent Association will earn 15% of all sale and non-sale purchase prices, and the items on the flyer will be sent out two weeks after the sale ends (arriving around the first week in October). So get set for the cold weather with all your Crossroads Spirit Gear, and help support the PA at the same time. Please feel free to contact
Deb Hoffer
with any questions.

This is a social gathering, barbecue, and potluck event for all current Crossroads families, including siblings. Faculty and staff are also invited as guests. It is an excellent opportunity for all to connect!
Main Food Provided:
Hamburgers and hot dogs (including vegetarian options) are provided by the Parent Association. The third, fifth, and seventh grade families provide a variety of other staple food items and drinks. As hosts, they also set up, clean up, and grill food items for this event.
We ask all attending families to sign up to bring sides.
What to Bring:
All K-8 families are asked to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. A Dress Code Sale fundraiser and Art Portfolio sale will be held during the family picnic. Checks (preferred) and cash are accepted. The rain date for this event is Sunday, September 17.

PA Dress Code Swap (9/10)
Our annual Dress Code Swap will be held during the Family Picnic on Sunday, September 10. Over the past few years this swap has developed into a treasure trove of fabulous finds--and the price can't be beat. You pay what you like for whatever you take!
In anticipation of the event, we will be collecting your gently used, dress code appropriate clothes all week long. Please
drop off your donations in the box in the entryway of Klee. Your thoughtful donations are what make this swap great!
Items We Accept
:
Collared shirts of all kinds (including turtlenecks), pants (no jeans), shorts, skirts, dresses (play dresses and party frocks), dress blazers, sweaters, and spirit gear.
Items We Do Not Accept
:
T-shirts, non-collared shirts of any kind, clothes with rips or stains, clothes that are worn out, jeans*, athletic wear, men's and women's (adult) clothes, socks, undergarments, shoes, pajamas, outerwear, accessories, and hats.
Please volunteer to help sort the clothes in advance and with logistics on picnic day. Feel free to join the party--many hands make light work!
*Although jeans are now allowed at the school. We are not accepting them at this time as they tend to wear out more quickly than other pants. We may begin accepting them in the future but are not doing so for this year's swap.

Art Portfolio Sale (9/10)
In addition to the dress code swap, the PA will be selling 14" x 17" art presentation albums. These albums are an ideal way to organize your children's art for display--both past and future. There will be a limited number of albums available for sale at the Family Picnic. We will be accepting pre-paid orders (checks are preferred, made out to Crossroads Academy Parent Association) for albums to be delivered to your child's classroom following the event. Alternatively, you may reserve an album for delivery at the Picnic by emailing Megan Hammond by Labor Day.
The 14"x17" album will sell for $15. It's a great way to get art out of your storage stockpile and into a form where you and your artists can enjoy it. Proceeds will be used to fulfill teacher petitions.
