A few years before missionaries from Boston set out for Hawaii, the same association of Congregational Churches sent a group of missionaries to India. Among these was a young medical doctor and his wife - John and Harriet Scudder. At that time Ceylon was part of British India. They settled in Jaffna, spending 17 years there starting the world's first medical mission station. They then moved to south India to begin medical work there. Of their 10 children, nine eventually became missionaries in India.

The Frank Scudder of Church of the Crossroads was the grandson of John and Harriet. Frank was a missionary in Japan before relocating to Hawaii to work with Japanese youth groups in the territory. These groups formed the nucleus of the movement that founded Church of the Crossroads.

NEXT SUNDAY, October 22, we will hear from Drs. Sam and Pamela Samraj, two missionary doctors serving at the Scudder Memorial Hospital in South India founded by John and Harriet Scudder. Please join us for this Adult Education session at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary.

We will also be welcoming them as our guest preachers at our 10:30 a.m. worship service.

THIS SUNDAY, October 15, we start our exploration of Crossroads’ missionaries, learning about members who headed to Japan, China, and the Marshall Islands from the mid-30s. We also have members who are the children of missionaries, Kaye and Ken Kroehler, who will share stories about their folks during their many years of service in Japan.  We will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Ross Davis room.

The parade will kick off at 9AM from Magic Island, travel along Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalākaua Avenue and end at the Waikīkī Shell.

Our group will be checked in and waiting in our designated space in the Magic Island parking lot by 6:30AM. Marchers should meet no later than 8am so we can get organized and be in line and ready to go. Don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, hats, and your sunglasses.
