A Note from Acting Head of School...
Dear Parents,
I’ve done some “eye reading” this week and some “ear reading.” These terms are used by Ben Foss in his book “The Dyslexia Empowerment Plan: A Blueprint for Renewing Your Child’s Confidence and Love of Learning. He reminds us that the it is important to see the overall goal and not get over focused or confounded by the method of reaching the goal. Our goal is learning. Eye reading, or reading with one’s eyes, is only one mode of transmitting knowledge. Ear reading, or listening to text is another. There is more than one way to do almost anything. Our job as educators, is to help each child find the way that works for them, and then, to make each child an advocate for their own learning style.
Periodically, in this newsletter, I will share short reviews of books I am reading and I would like to offer this newsletter as a format for you to do the same. If you have a good book from which you think others would benefit, please send me the information and I will post it in a regular section called “The Books We are Reading”. (See below)

On another note, Monday and Tuesday mark the start of the Jewish New Year. It is a time of introspection and offers a fresh start going forward. Crossroads School is undergoing a New Year filled with teamwork and a renewed dedication to our core mission. I wish us all a happy, healthy and successful New Year.

Drop-off and Pick-up
Please help us keep the drop-off and pick-up process as safe as possible. We ask that parents and others please refrain from using cell phones during drop-off and pick-up. We want everyone alert and able to attend to directions from staff. Our students are often eager to share the details of their day with you. They are not always safety conscious so we need you to be.

Thank you... and on a related note...
Who is picking up your child?

Please remember to send Julianne an email if someone not currently on your child's Authorized Pick Up list is picking up your child from school. If you have questions, please contact  Julianne

The Books We Are Reading
Simple summary of books of interest to our Crossroads Community. These books are submitted by staff and parents.

BOOK TITLE:
The Dyslexia Empowerment Plan: A Blueprint for Renewing Your Child's Confidence and Love of Learning

AUTHOR: Ben Foss

SUMMARY: I found this to be a very informative guide on the subject of Dyslexia, how to understand it and how to help your child understand it. While the later portion of this book focuses on helping parents navigate the public school system, it does illustrate the underlying benefits and drawbacks of various accommodations. Ben Foss has dyslexia and is able to explain this nonobvious disability and the way it can adversely effect the emotional well being of a person if it is treated as a disease that needs to be cured. The book provides many checklists and resources. I will be sharing my notes with the staff and I encourage any parent who has a child with dyslexia to "eye read" it or do as I did, download it on Audible(or other format) and "Ear Read" it!
