St. Barnabas Financial Support

Thank you for your ongoing financial support of St. Barnabas and our ministry partners. Your faithful support makes it possible to live out our mission in the community and the world.

Guest Speaker this Sunday

Our “Gift of Love” offering this month is Lutheran Campus Ministry. Maria Navarre will be a junior this year at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities where she’s double-majoring in Global Studies and French. In 2022-2023 Maria took a gap year and studied abroad through a U.S. Department of State program in Rabat, Morocco, which helped her develop a love for travel and studying the world, and in particular, religion and migration studies. She’s been a member of Lutheran Campus Ministry for the past two years and it has become a home for her on campus. Maria is excited to come and share more about their ministry with St. Barnabas! “Transitions” led by Pastor Alex George

Tuesday, August 19th and Tuesday, August 26th at 6:30pm. Pastor Alex is a St. Barnabas member and chaplain at Children’s Hospital. Our church has been amid a sea of change since 2020 with the pandemic, pastoral and staffing changes, and those natural changes that happen within our own lives. Each of the 60-minute sessions will include a topic discussion around grief and healing, opportunities to share, and a focus on ritual and prayer. All are welcome to participate. You can sign up at the Welcome Center.

Guest Singer Next Sunday

The St. Barnabas’ RIC Exploratory Committee is pleased to welcome Rod Kelly Hines, a baritone from Cantus,. He will provide special music during the service on Sunday, August 24th, as well as speak about his experience as a gay man of faith and the importance of finding a community where you can be your authentic self. Cantus is a full-time a cappella vocal ensemble that strives to give voice to our shared human experiences by inspiring audiences through song and word. It began as a student-run organization at St. Olaf college; over the years has grown and achieved international recognition, and now performs over 70 concerts each season in the US and abroad. Cantus is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501c(3) organization. See: https://www.cantussings.org

Christian Education

We are excited to be gearing up for another year of programing! Sunday School and Confirmation is open for registration. Sunday School will be studying the Bible story from worship each Sunday and Confirmation will be exploring what it means to be a Lutheran Christian. Please put September 7th on your calendar for our kick-off Sunday and Blessing of the Backpacks and Teachers! Please use the email registration link you received from Bryce or click on this QR Code to register.

St. Barnabas Choir

The St. Barnabas Choir will be starting rehearsals and regular music offerings during services again! Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, August 27th

from 7pm-8:30pm in the Ministry Center. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join! Whether you have sung in choirs before, or are just starting out, we would love for you to come sing with us! Our first Sunday back for services will be Rally Sunday, September 7th. We hope to see you at our first rehearsal!

Like Coffee?

Everyone enjoys having a treat and a cup of coffee with their friends on Sunday mornings, but we can’t offer this ministry of fellowship without people to host the coffee hour. While we could use more volunteers in lots of ministry areas, we’re especially in need of extra Coffee Hosts. If you’ve never volunteered in this area before, we will train you in everything you need to know. Sign up at the Welcome Center.

Hospital Visitation

If you or someone you know will be hospitalized and would like a visit from a pastor, please reach out directly to the church office or one of the pastors. HIPAA confidentiality laws prohibit hospitals from sharing patient information.

The Prayer Chain

If you would like to participate in praying for our members and friends, please talk with Pastor Tom. If you would like to request prayer from our Prayer Chain, contact Brenda in the church office or talk with Pastor Tom or our Pastoral Assistant Bryce. Please indicate if you would like your prayer request to be shared with the congregation, or if it is confidential. For those needing our prayers, any member of the congregation can request a prayer shawl for themselves, friends or family. Please contact Bonnie Welshons or Brenda in the church office to obtain a prayer shawl and the pamphlet that goes with it.

Beacon Action for New Funding for Housing

Sign Letter to Chairs and Ranking members

in Congress about Housing Funding

Right now, the House and Senate committees are working on the federal appropriation amounts for housing. We need a robust investment in housing vouchers and homelessness grants. We are doing a great job reaching out to the Minnesota delegation with our postcard action, and we need to raise our profile nationally. Help us elevate it by signing onto this letter to the Chair and ranking members of the committees making these decisions in Washington, D.C.

Click here to put your name on an official letter Beacon will send to the leaders of the Congressional Committees making budget decisions on housing. We will also cc all of the Minnesota members of Congress.

OWLs Event ~ August 12th

Our guest DJ Mike Henry was a fabulous presenter who played clips from 116 of the biggest hit records from the 1950’s & early 1960’s. We had close to 40 people attend and so many people said it was such a fun time. Thanks to all for coming to this special event. Oh, and the 6 different flavors of cheesecake were delicious!

Photos of the Week

On Wednesday, one of our gardeners, Julie Hanson spotted 2 huge, absolutely gorgeous caterpillars (at least 4" long) in some shrubs at church. Her and Brenda Ericson took some great photos and wanted to share them with you. After doing some research online, they learned these are Cecropia caterpillars. Following is some information on them. The moth picture is what they will look like after they leave their cocoons.

Cecropia moths, the largest native moth in North America, are in the giant silk moth family and boast a wingspan of up to 7". As caterpillars, they grow up to 4.5" and spend 10 months in cocoons before living only 2 weeks as adults. Cecropias do a year’s worth of eating in their pupal stage and then emerge as mouthless moths, they have no functional mouthparts or digestive tracts so they cannot eat! Their sole purpose is to find a mate and reproduce!
