Guest Preacher This Sunday

Our Gift of Love for January is our partner congregation, San Pablo/St. Paul’s. Their pastor, Hierald Osorto, will be with us on January 14th, preaching in worship and leading a forum between services. Pastor Hierald was called to serve as Pastor of Saint Paul Lutheran Church/Iglesia Lutherana San Pablo in October 2021. Pastor Hierald previously served Ithaca College as the Executive Director for Student Equity & Belonging and the founding Director of Religious & Spiritual Life. 

St. Barnabas Annual Meeting & Brunch Potluck

Sunday, January 28th at 9:30am

We will be having one service at 8:30am on January 28th. After worship, we will hold our annual meeting and look back at our 2023 year, discuss our 2024 church budget, and bring important votes for open council positions and our annual church budget. This is our important work of the church, and you are an important part of this process.

We will also elect voting members for the Minneapolis Area Synod Assembly, May 2nd-4th. This year’s Assembly will be exciting, since we’ll be electing a new bishop! We are able to bring two lay voting members, as well as an additional youth voting member. Talk to Pastor Stephanie if you’re interested!

Immediately following the meeting we will celebrate together with a brunch potluck. Bring something to share! Yes, it's a good old fashion potluck!

Easter Breakfast Back This Year!

Breakfast will be served starting at 7:30am until 12:15pm and the menu will be:

Carmel Apple French Toast with Bananas Foster, Strawberry, or Maple Syrup

Cheesy Hashbrown Sausage Egg Bake

Fruit

Coffee & Juice

We will need volunteers (ideally 3 people plus Dale) to help prepare the food on Saturday March 30th, help cook the breakfast on Sunday March 31st, as well as servers and clean up crews. Please consider helping make this breakfast a success by volunteering for an hour or two on Easter Sunday.

There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex as we get closer to the date.

Lenten Soup Suppers

We will once again have Lenten Soup Suppers every Wednesday during Lent starting February 14th (Ash Wednesday).

Dale Sanderson has volunteered to prepare the Ash Wednesday soups, buns, & treats. We are looking for volunteers to cook the rest of the soups each week so that we can taste all your favorites. Dale will take care of the treats and buns each week and if you need help with preparing your soups, give Dale a call at 763-242 2591. Soup requirements are 4-5 gallons of 2 different soups with one soup preferably gluten free. Soup Suppers will start at 5:15pm each Wednesday.

There's a sign-up sheet in the Narthex. We also need volunteers to serve & clean up each week!

Volunteer Pictures Wanted

If you have pictures of people volunteering in any way here at church in 2023, please email them to Brenda in the church office.

OWLs (Older Wiser Lutherans) Tuesday, February 13th

Join us for bingo and snacks at 1pm. Once again we're asking everyone that comes to play bingo to bring a "White Elephant Gift" to be given away as a prize. A white elephant gift is something you have at home that you don’t need or want anymore. It could be a book, board game, fry pan, picture, knick-knack, DVD, jewelry, etc. It will be fun to see what people want to donate. There's a sign-up sheet in the narthex. The deadline to sign-up is February 9th. Please talk to Brenda in the church office if you have questions.

Birthday Announcements

We will be taking a break from announcing birthdays in the E-News and Sunday bulletin until our church directory has been completed. We want to make sure that the dates we list are for current members and their families.

Tax Preparation Assistance

AARP Taxaide is happy to return again this year to St. Barnabas on Wednesdays starting February 7th from 9am-3pm. They provide free tax assistance for taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income. This service is provided by AARP volunteers certified each year by the IRS. Tax payers can have their Federal, State and MN Property taxes e-filed. They will also get a paper copy of everything that is filed. AARP cannot do returns for businesses, self-employed people or complex returns.

Leave a message starting January 12th at 612-699-1218 with your name and phone number and a volunteer will return your call to set up an appointment.

Church Directory

The 2024 directory will not be printed until sometime in February so there's still time to get your picture or info added. Send what you have to Brenda in the church office at [email protected] or call her at (763) 553-1239.

Households without a picture may be filled in using a picture from a previous directory (2018 or older).

If you have a new mailing address, a new email address, have added a mobile number or changed an existing number in the past 12 months, let Brenda know of the changes. Also, let Brenda know if you no longer attend St. Barnabas and would like to be removed from the directory.

New Book Group Coming Soon

Another Sunday morning Book Group will be forming soon to read Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians by Austen Hartke. The first group learned so much from this experience that they wanted others to have a chance to read the book in community. If you are curious, or even confused, about the changing language of gender identity, and want to learn how God calls us to love our neighbors, no matter their pronouns, sign up on the sheet in the Narthex. 

Beacon Housing Initiatives

Welcome to all Beacon Housing supporters who want to learn more about Housing initiatives in 2024. Whether you are new or an existing supporter, this will be an interesting and energizing event.

Beacon Congregational Convening – 1/18/24 at Richfield United Methodist Church from 6:30pm - 8:30pm (Zoom option available).

Join hundreds of Beacon community members to celebrate the impact of our advocacy and organizing power. We’ll ground ourselves in the urgency of the current housing crisis, explore Beacon’s proposed interventions and legislative campaigns in 2024, and identify actions we can take to increase access to deeply affordable housing. We’ll hear from Beacon’s CEO, Chris LaTondresse, and other housing champions. Plus, we’ll spend time in assembly and workshops that will equip us to build the power we need to meet this moment.

St. Barnabas "Spotlight"

Rock Around The Clock “A 50’s /60’s Music Review” will be held here at church on January 27th & 28th at 6:30pm.

Tickets are $7.00 and can be purchased at church before the event starts. 

This event will be located in the Ministry Center.

January "Gift of Love"

San Pablo/St. Paul's Lutheran Church

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1887 to meet the spiritual needs of the Swedish Lutherans of the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. Much has changed in the neighborhood, but their purpose remains strong- to meet the needs of the neighborhood and faith community, through weekly worship as well as deep community involvement. They are a central fixture in the neighborhood, with their building hosting one medical clinic, daily Spanish-language AA meetings, and the Semilla Center for Healing and the Arts.

Christmas is over, but people are still in need. Here is what we're currently

collecting at our Donation Station in the Narthex.

Beacon Bimosedaa- Indigenous residents previously experiencing homelessness are moving into this new property and are in need of items to set up a new home.

• Twin extra long sheets and twin size comforters
• Cleaning items (paper towels, disinfectant spray, Clorox wipes, toilet brush and plunger, etc)
• Kitchen items (pots, plates & cups, silverware, utensils, can opener, etc.)
• Target gift cards are also welcome

IOCP Food Shelf Most Needed Items

• Brand Name Cereal
• Hearty Soup
• Healthy Snacks (e.g. popcorn, crackers, granola bars)
• Healthy Beverages (e.g. sparkling water, tea, juice boxes)
