This is our important work of the church, and you are an important part of this process.

Immediately following the meeting we will celebrate together with a brunch potluck. Bring something to share! Yes, it's a good old fashion potluck!

Word for Women

Word for Women is a St. Barnabas women’s book group, meets weekly at church on Thursday mornings 9:30am-11am. We invite you to join us to discuss our next book, “Separation of Church and Hate” by John Fugelsang. The author invites us to find ways to talk about the Bible when confronted with views that run counter to the teachings of Jesus. This book is controversial and may challenge us at times. We will begin reading chapters, 1-7, January 22nd-February 12th. We will pause Ash Wednesday through Holy Week for a Lent study resource. The group will read chapters 8-14 April 9th-30th. Please sign up and indicate if you will need assistance in purchasing a book. Pastor Alexandra George: pastoralex@stbarnanbaslutheran.org

Care Partnering Group

Meet with Melissa Weinhandl to discuss the challenges of caregiving, get support from others in similar situations, receive resources for extra assistance. This group will meet on four Mondays: February 2, 9, 16, 23, from 1pm-2pm in the Family Resource Center at St. Barnabas. Your loved one is also invited to come and participate in a separate program (hymn sing, coloring/painting activities, conversation, etc.) in the Gardenview Room.

VOLUNTEERS are also needed to assist with the spouse/loved ones activities. There is a sign up sheet at the Welcome Center to register for this group or as a volunteer. Please contact Melissa for further details or with

questions (952-484-9859).

RIC Exploratory Committee

We were fortunate to have had Reverend Jim Bear Jacobs of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation as our guest preacher on Sunday 1/11. Reverend Jim Bear shared a thoughtful message on the Native American experience with traditional established religions, and how cultural practices sacred to his people have been demonized in the past. His insights invited us to listen more deeply, and grow in understanding and respect. Jim Bear was the latest guest preacher in a series organized by the St Barnabas Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Exploratory Committee to help us consider what it means to be a fully-inclusive church. The RIC Exploratory Committee meets the second Monday of each month at 1pm - come join us!

St. Paul's - San Pablo Lutheran Church

“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7) In these challenging times, I have seen the love of God alive in our community. Love has surged through our neighbors taking to the streets to protest ICE. Love moves through our members who organize boxes of pantry staples for over 70 families within a few blocks of San Pablo–St. Paul’s. Love pings in my phone, with message after message from people asking, “What can I do?” In response, I offer a few ways that you can support our community in staying strong. These are not mere tasks to be completed; these are acts of love that call for intentionality and flexibility. Our sacred scriptures challenge us to love how God loves, becoming vulnerable like Jesus. Consider how you might embody costly love:

Provide transportation to school, work, and medical appointments. Our needs range from 5:30am commutes to work 20-30 minutes outside of Minneapolis, to 7:30am school drop-offs, to taking people home at 11pm. Shop for groceries, from the basics to items that you will only find at Spanish-speaking stores. Pick up life-saving medication from pharmacies. Offer childcare after school or on weekends. Our needs range from 3:20pm pick-up with care until around 9PM on weekdays. At times this would also include providing a warm meal. On weekends, our needs range from 2pm-10pm. Be a vigilant presence at community gatherings. Donate to our community aid fund. In the past 14 months, San Pablo–St. Paul’s has invested over $100,000 in the well-being of our neighbors. Your financial contribution, whether a one-time or ongoing gift, enables us to continue to provide direct support to our neighbors. To contribute visit us here: https://www.sanpablostpaul.org/give.html

If you are motivated to live out love in any of these ways, please contact at info@sanpablostpaul.org with your contact information, days available, and any particular areas where you’d like to support. Like magi following a star, Holy Love lights our way. On Sunday after our service you are invited to join our partners at the Semilla Center for Healing and the Arts in making papier-mache stars for demonstrations. Also on Sunday, photojournalist John Noltner from A Peace of My Mind will facilitate a conversation and lead a photo studio session on claiming our humanity. As always, we will share food together, including sandwiches from Manny’s Tortas at Midtown Global Market.

May the God of love strengthen us during this uncertain season and bless every act of solidarity. Amen.

En paz and hope,

Pr. Hierald

Gift of Love

January "Gift of Love"

San Pablo/St. Paul

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1887 to meet the spiritual needs of the Swedish Lutherans of the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. Much has changed in the neighborhood, but their purpose remains strong- to meet the needs of the neighborhood and faith community, through weekly worship as well as deep community involvement. They are a central fixture in the neighborhood, with their building hosting one medical clinic, daily Spanish-language AA meetings, and the Semilla Center for Healing and the Arts.
