Update on our Refugees – Good News, Sad Reality

As of late Wednesday, January 29th, our Refugee Ruth has been released from custody. This is good news, along with the change of status to Permanent Legal Resident/Green Card. The sponsor team was excited to pick her up and bring her back to her son. The sad reality is what Ruth went through to get to this point. As a legal refugee who had filed paperwork for a green card, she should have been able to have an interview appointment where she could prepare, be accompanied by her attorney and an interpreter, and been finished in a few hours. Instead, she was flown to El Paso and spent several nights in a tent immigration camp. Then the attorneys request for writ of habeas corpus was seen by a judge and they flew her back to Minnesota. She had a 7-hour interview on Monday and was able to have her attorney and an interpreter only because she was back in Minnesota. She was never allowed a shower or toothbrush or change of clothes. Her diabetes pills were taken away; she went 8 days without her prescription medication. She had to sleep on a thin pad on the concrete floor with only a mylar blanket. Food consisted of a simple ham sandwich and frozen oranges. This is happening to hundreds of other refugees in Minnesota. This way of reviewing legal residents is very costly for both the government and the refugees. We are grateful to be able to help her by hiring an attorney.

We celebrate Ruth’s release and will help her return to a normal life, continue her job and her son’s school. If you would like to help with expenses, there are two ways to donate:

  1. Offering plate or online St. Barnabas donation – put “Refugees” in the memo line
  2. GoFundMe at this link

Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support of Ruth and her son.

Global Health Ministries

Global Health Ministries (GHM) is an independent Lutheran nonprofit (501c3) established in 1987, and specializes in capacity-building for Lutheran health systems in under-resourced countries, serving some of the most vulnerable people in the world. We believe all people should have access to a healthy life. But they don’t. Together we can make a difference. Each year thousands of volunteers gather in our Minnesota-based warehouse to help sort and pack medical equipment and supplies to share around the world. At the request of our international partners we also

offer grants and volunteer consultants to help build their capacity to move the needle on health in their communities and effect sustainable and enduring change.
